India Battles Disinformation Amidst Heightened Tensions with Pakistan
New Delhi – In the wake of ongoing tensions and military actions involving India and Pakistan, a wave of misinformation has flooded social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter). The Press Information Bureau (PIB), India’s fact-checking arm, has been working diligently to debunk fabricated videos and narratives aimed at fueling public anxiety and misrepresenting the situation. Two recent instances highlight the nature of these disinformation campaigns and the government’s efforts to counter them.
One video, widely circulated on X, purportedly showed a Pakistani attack on Hazira Port in Gujarat. The dramatic footage depicted a large explosion and subsequent destruction, with accompanying captions claiming responsibility by Pakistani forces. However, PIB swiftly exposed the video as fraudulent. Fact-checkers traced the footage back to a 2021 oil tanker explosion, completely unrelated to the current geopolitical context. The video’s resurgence with false claims underscores the manipulative tactics employed in these disinformation campaigns.
Another fabricated video claimed to document a drone attack in Jalandhar. This video, too, was quickly debunked by PIB. Fact-checkers identified the footage as depicting a farm fire, noting discrepancies between the video’s timestamp and the reported time of the alleged drone attack. The rapid spread of these videos demonstrates the potential for misinformation to go viral, especially during periods of heightened public interest and concern.
These incidents represent a broader pattern of disinformation emanating from across the border, often amplified by Pakistani influencers, media outlets, and even government-sponsored social media accounts. Following India’s cross-border strikes on terror bases in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Pakistan in May, the volume of false propaganda has intensified significantly. PIB has exposed numerous fabricated videos and narratives connected to the military actions, emphasizing the need for public vigilance against such misleading content.
The Indian government recognizes the serious threat posed by these disinformation campaigns. False narratives not only distort public understanding of events but can also erode national morale and create unnecessary panic. Officials have repeatedly warned social media users about the legal consequences of spreading false information, whether intentionally or unintentionally, under India’s cyber laws. PIB has urged citizens to verify information from official sources before sharing it online, stressing the importance of relying on credible channels during times of heightened national security.
