Ras Al Khaimah Cracks Down on Social Media Misinformation, Seven Individuals Face Prosecution

Ras Al Khaimah, UAE – Authorities in Ras Al Khaimah have taken decisive action against the spread of misinformation on social media, referring seven individuals to the Public Prosecution since the beginning of 2025. These individuals are accused of disseminating inaccurate and inappropriate visual and written content, including false information and rumors that jeopardize societal security and manipulate public opinion. The Ras Al Khaimah Police General Command emphasized the seriousness of these offenses and the commitment to maintaining public order and safety. This move underscores the UAE’s ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of fake news and harmful content online.

The individuals facing prosecution are alleged to have shared content deemed inappropriate and inaccurate, potentially inciting unrest and disrupting social harmony. The authorities have not released specific details regarding the nature of the content, but their actions reflect a zero-tolerance policy towards the dissemination of false information that could negatively impact public safety and societal stability. The referral to the Public Prosecution marks a crucial step in the legal process, paving the way for potential penalties if the individuals are found guilty.

This crackdown on social media misinformation aligns with the UAE’s stringent laws against spreading rumors and fake news. Existing legislation stipulates penalties ranging from hefty fines of Dh100,000 to Dh200,000 to imprisonment for one to two years. These substantial consequences highlight the seriousness with which the UAE treats the spread of misinformation and its potential repercussions. The legal framework aims to deter individuals from engaging in such activities and protect the public from the harmful effects of false information.

The recent actions in Ras Al Khaimah echo similar initiatives undertaken by other emirates. In April 2025, Abu Dhabi Police issued a public advisory urging residents to refrain from spreading rumors and unverified information. The advisory emphasized the importance of verifying information before sharing it on social media platforms to ensure the safety and well-being of the community. This coordinated approach across the UAE demonstrates a unified commitment to combating misinformation and promoting responsible social media usage.

Furthermore, the UAE’s legal framework extends beyond the spread of rumors and fake news to encompass morally unethical content that contravenes the country’s principles of tolerance and coexistence. Legal experts have warned that individuals who post or share such content on social media could face substantial fines of up to Dh1 million and imprisonment. Under UAE law, sharing, reposting, or distributing prohibited content carries the same legal weight as the original posting, emphasizing the shared responsibility in maintaining a healthy and respectful online environment.

The National Media Office (NMO) has reinforced the importance of upholding national values, respect, tolerance, and coexistence in online interactions. The NMO has explicitly warned against content that disrespects national symbols, public figures, or friendly nations and their societies. Violations of these guidelines can result in a range of penalties, including administrative fines from Dh1,000 to Dh1 million, which can be doubled for repeat offenses. In addition, media establishments found in violation may face temporary or permanent closure, and licenses, permits, or approvals can be revoked. The NMO’s emphasis on these principles underscores the UAE’s dedication to maintaining a respectful and harmonious online space.
