West Bengal Police Combat Online Hate Speech Amidst Communal Tensions

Kolkata, West Bengal – In the wake of recent communal violence in the Murshidabad district, the West Bengal Police are actively combating the spread of hate speech and misinformation on social media platforms. Authorities have identified a surge in fake profiles, primarily on Facebook, disseminating inflammatory content aimed at inciting communal hatred and spreading anti-national sentiments. These profiles, falsely claiming to represent Murshidabad residents, have become a breeding ground for provocative messages that threaten to reignite tensions in the already sensitive region.

The police’s cybercrime unit has launched a comprehensive crackdown on these malicious accounts, blocking numerous profiles and initiating legal action against those responsible. Summon notices have been issued to several individuals linked to the fake profiles, and multiple cases have been registered under relevant laws. The police are determined to hold accountable those who exploit social media to spread discord and endanger communal harmony.

The recent violence in Samserganj, Suti, and Raghunathganj prompted authorities to temporarily suspend internet services to curb the spread of misinformation. While the situation initially stabilized after the restoration of internet connectivity, a resurgence of inflammatory posts from fake profiles has raised concerns about further unrest. These posts, containing fabricated narratives and distorted accounts of the violence, are being shared widely, posing a significant threat to peace and stability.

The police have observed a pattern in these posts, noting that the profiles often claim to be residents of various locations within Murshidabad, while their IP addresses trace back to locations outside the district. This deliberate attempt to mask their true identities suggests a coordinated effort to spread misinformation and incite communal tensions. The police are working diligently to identify the individuals behind these profiles and bring them to justice.

In response to the escalating online threat, West Bengal Police have issued a public appeal urging citizens to refrain from sharing or forwarding provocative messages that could fuel mistrust and hatred. They emphasize the importance of responsible social media usage and encourage individuals to report any instances of hate speech or misinformation. The police are committed to working with social media platforms to ensure the swift removal of harmful content.

The ongoing investigation into the communal violence has resulted in a significant number of arrests, with 306 individuals apprehended in connection with 153 registered cases. Among those arrested are six individuals who had fled to Jharsuguda in Odisha following the violence. The police are continuing their efforts to identify and apprehend all those involved in the unrest, and are determined to restore peace and harmony to the affected areas. The fight against online hate speech and misinformation remains a top priority for the West Bengal Police, as they work tirelessly to protect the community from the insidious effects of malicious online activity. They urge continued vigilance and cooperation from the public in identifying and reporting such harmful content. As the investigation continues, the police remain committed to ensuring accountability and maintaining peace within the community.
