India Refutes Pakistani Claims of JF-17 Damage to S-400 Systems

India Rejects Pakistan’s Claims of Damaging S-400 and Military Installations Amidst Ceasefire Announcement

New Delhi, May 10, 2025 – In the wake of a recently announced ceasefire between India and Pakistan, the Indian Ministry of Defence has vehemently denied claims made by Islamabad regarding the alleged damage inflicted upon India’s air defense systems and military installations. The ceasefire, which halts days of escalating military actions and heightened tensions, follows a terrorist attack in Pahalgam that further strained the already fragile relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The Indian government confirmed that the ceasefire was a result of direct negotiations between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries.

During a press briefing, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, spokesperson for the Indian Defence Ministry, categorically dismissed Pakistan’s assertions as misinformation. Central to Pakistan’s claims was the purported damage inflicted upon India’s S-400 air defense system, a sophisticated and highly advanced missile defense platform, by Pakistan’s JF-17 fighter jets. Colonel Qureshi firmly stated that this claim was "completely wrong," emphasizing that the S-400 system remained fully operational and unaffected by any Pakistani action. The JF-17, a jointly developed aircraft by Pakistan and China, is not considered a significant threat to the S-400’s capabilities.

Furthermore, Pakistan had propagated a narrative alleging damage to several key Indian airfields, including those located in Sirsa, Jammu, Pathankot, Bhatinda, Nalia, and Bhuj. Colonel Qureshi reiterated the Indian government’s stance, dismissing these claims as entirely fabricated. The Indian Air Force confirmed that all airfields remained fully operational and had not sustained any damage during the recent exchange of fire. This misinformation campaign, according to Indian officials, was a deliberate attempt by Pakistan to project an image of strength and effectiveness, which was entirely divorced from reality.

Pakistan’s misinformation campaign also extended to claims of damage inflicted upon Indian ammunition depots in Chandigarh and Vyas. These claims were similarly refuted by the Indian Defence Ministry, which confirmed the full operational status of all ammunition depots. The dissemination of such false information, according to Indian officials, was part of a broader strategy by Pakistan to create confusion and anxiety within India. The intent, analysts suggest, was to potentially disrupt logistical operations and undermine public confidence in the Indian military’s preparedness.

Beyond the purported damage to military infrastructure, Pakistan also leveled accusations against the Indian Army, alleging the destruction of mosques during military operations. Colonel Qureshi strongly rejected these allegations, emphasizing India’s secular nature and the Indian Army’s commitment to upholding the constitutional values of the nation. She characterized the Indian Army as a reflection of India’s diverse and pluralistic society, where all religious beliefs are respected and protected. These accusations, according to Indian authorities, were a cynical attempt to exploit religious sentiments and incite communal discord.

The ceasefire announcement, while welcomed by both nations and the international community, comes against a backdrop of long-standing mistrust and animosity between India and Pakistan. The recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam served as a flashpoint, igniting a series of military exchanges and escalating tensions to a precarious level. The decision by both countries to engage in direct dialogue and agree upon a cessation of hostilities is seen as a crucial step towards de-escalation and a potential pathway towards a more peaceful future.

The underlying causes of the conflict, however, remain unresolved, and the ceasefire represents a fragile truce rather than a permanent solution. The international community has urged both India and Pakistan to engage in sustained dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict and work towards a lasting peace in the region. The dissemination of misinformation, as highlighted by the Indian Defence Ministry’s response to Pakistani claims, underscores the challenges in building trust and fostering meaningful communication between the two nations. The coming days and weeks will be crucial in determining whether the ceasefire holds and whether it can pave the way for a more constructive and peaceful relationship between India and Pakistan.
