“Russian ‘Matryoshka’ Bot Network Targets French Presidential Prospect Ahead of 2027 Election”

As France prepares for the 2027 presidential election, a sophisticated Russian influence operation known as the “Matryoshka” network has launched a coordinated disinformation campaign targeting Gabriel Attal. Researchers from the Antibot4Navalny project, who monitor pro-Russian automated social media activity, identified eight distinct fake videos disseminated by the network. Each video is meticulously crafted to mimic the visual branding of reputable French news outlets, including Le Monde, Le Figaro, and France 24, and concludes with the alarmist narrative that a new “scandal” threatens Attal’s political future.

The disinformation campaign employs a “kitchen sink” strategy, deploying a wide array of fabricated controversies to alienate different segments of the French electorate. These bots have circulated malicious claims ranging from the personal to the geopolitical: they allege that Attal struggles with drug addiction, falsely assert that he suffers from Parkinson’s disease, and claim he has used his family foundation to launder military aid meant for Ukraine. By weaponizing sensitive topics such as religious identity, migration, and the Israel-Palestine conflict, the campaign attempts to paint the candidate as both morally compromised and physically unfit for office.

A hallmark of the Matryoshka network’s methodology is the strategic blending of verifiable facts with incendiary falsehoods to lend an air of legitimacy to their fabrications. For instance, while the campaign references real events—such as Attal’s sexual orientation, his policy banning the abaya in schools, and the 2023 legal troubles of the NGO Anticor—these elements are twisted into malicious, non-existent narratives. The videos frequently fabricate quotes from high-profile figures, including the rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris and various French media directors, to create an artificial consensus of public outrage surrounding the candidate.

This operation represents a significant escalation in foreign interference ahead of the 2027 contest. Gabriel Attal, who officially announced his presidential bid in May 2026, is viewed as the political successor to outgoing President Emmanuel Macron. As the primary centrist candidate facing competition from figures like Édouard Philippe, Attal has become a lightning rod for Russian disinformation efforts. Security analysts note that the Matryoshka network has a history of targeting French internal politics, previously attempting to sow discord by fabricating government correspondence to undermine the nation’s foreign policy stances regarding Armenia and Russia.

The “Matryoshka” label, coined by the Antibot4Navalny project, refers to the operation’s complex, nesting-doll structure of digital deception. By utilizing an expansive infrastructure of fake accounts that mimic the writing styles and linguistic nuances of local populations, the network creates a dense fog of artificial information. These bots operate in layered cycles, distributing identical content simultaneously across multiple platforms and utilizing stolen logos of Western news organizations to deceive social media users into believing they are consuming legitimate investigative reporting.

As the election approaches, the discovery of this campaign underscores the evolving threat that AI-driven, state-sponsored disinformation poses to democratic processes. The Insider and researchers have verified the origins of these posts, confirming they emanate from the same network responsible for previous cyber-influence operations. By avoiding the direct amplification of these materials, analysts hope to contain the spread of this “information noise,” though the incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges France faces in protecting its electoral integrity from coordinated foreign interference.
