According to the ministry, approximately 40,000 individuals participated in the rush toward Ceuta, while another 1,135 were intercepted by authorities while attempting to breach the border at Melilla. This surge in activity triggered a significant humanitarian and security crisis that has reverberated throughout the European Union.
The human cost of the border breach remains a point of contention and confusion between the two nations. Morocco’s Interior Ministry reported at least 11 deaths occurring on its side of the border; however, this figure stands in stark contrast to the data provided by the Spanish government, which claimed to have recovered at least 72 bodies.
