The Delhi Police have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the violent clashes that occurred during the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) ‘Chalo Sansad’ protest on Monday. What began as a demonstration against alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination devolved into a chaotic confrontation as protesters attempted to march toward Parliament despite being denied official permission. In the aftermath, police have registered five separate FIRs at the Parliament Street and Connaught Place stations, citing serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including rioting, vandalism, obstruction of public servants, and the destruction of government property.
As the investigation gains momentum, authorities are scrutinizing over 250 pieces of digital evidence, including CCTV footage, drone recordings, and body-worn camera visuals. Police sources have confirmed the detention of more than 70 individuals, whose identities and potential criminal backgrounds are currently being vetted. Investigators are particularly focused on determining whether the unrest was a spontaneous outburst or a premeditated conspiracy orchestrated by organized groups. Preliminary assessments suggest that a significant number of those detained were not students, raising concerns about the potential involvement of external actors seeking to capitalize on the protest to incite instability.
A major pillar of the police probe involves the role of social media in fueling the violence. Cyber experts are currently tracking the origins of inflammatory and misleading content that circulated across platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram in the lead-up to the march. Authorities have identified a coordinated effort to spread misinformation, specifically citing handles operating from Pakistan that amplified fabricated casualty statistics—falsely claiming hundreds of injuries and deaths—to incite public panic. The police are now working to trace the architecture of this digital misinformation campaign to establish if organizations or individuals were actively financing or instigating the unrest.
The physical confrontation in the heart of the national capital resulted in significant damage to public infrastructure and the targeting of law enforcement. Near Regal Cinema in the Outer Circle of Connaught Place, protesters reportedly ignored police barricades, pelting stones at security personnel and vandalizing government vehicles. Delhi Police officials have released video evidence showing individuals launching projectiles from behind barricades, a move that severely compromised the high-security zone. Following the clashes, the force issued an urgent plea on social media, urging citizens to disregard unverified rumors and to cooperate with authorities to restore order in the capital.
The human toll of the protest was significant, with over 118 police personnel—including senior officials and female officers—sustained injuries during the efforts to contain the mob. Approximately 60 protesters were also reported injured as security forces attempted to manage the escalating situation. The incident marked a sharp departure from peaceful advocacy, as protesters clashed violently with officers who were attempting to enforce the law and protect the sanctity of the high-security parliamentary area.
