In a significant address at Dhaka University today, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon highlighted a major shift in the global media landscape, declaring that misinformation and disinformation have superseded information scarcity as the most formidable challenges of the modern era. Speaking at the Department Day celebrations for the Mass Communication and Journalism department, the Minister noted that society has moved from an age of limited access to information into a period of overwhelming “information overflow.” In this high-velocity environment, he warned that falsehoods are being systematically weaponized to manipulate public perception and influence societal narratives on a massive scale.
The event, held at the Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, featured prominent guests including Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam and New Age Editor Nurul Kabir. During the interactive session, Minister Swapon explained that while distortion has historically been a tool used to skew reality, the advent of digital technology has multiplied these risks exponentially. He pointed out that modern political maneuvers frequently involve calculated disinformation campaigns designed to target vulnerable demographics, such as swing voters, turning the management of public perception into a primary battlefield for national elections worldwide.
Addressing the state of the industry, Minister Swapon acknowledged that while the freedom of journalism remains a foundational concern, the emergence of fake and distorted content now occupies a far more dangerous space in the public sphere. He assured students and faculty that the government is actively working to mitigate these threats by integrating modern technological mechanisms and refining existing policy frameworks. Despite acknowledging current limitations, he emphasized that addressing this digital crisis is a top priority for his ministry to ensure that the public has access to credible, verified information.
Beyond the challenges of disinformation, the Minister addressed the internal vulnerabilities within the media sector, specifically regarding the professional dignity and financial security of media workers. He expressed deep concern over the prevalent practice of media outlets issuing identity cards to journalists without providing adequate salaries or job benefits, effectively leaving many reporters in precarious and exploited conditions. Swapon urged media entrepreneurs, editors, and the broader journalist community to reach a consensus that would prioritize structured financial security and uphold the professional standing of those working in the field.
Looking toward institutional reform, the Minister shared updates on the government’s progress in establishing a dedicated ‘Media Commission.’ He noted that preliminary consultations with key stakeholders are already underway, marking a significant step toward systemic change. This commission is intended to serve as a cornerstone for accountability and excellence, aiming to professionalize the industry and ensure that journalists are protected by robust, institutional safeguards rather than being left to fend for themselves in a volatile market.
In his concluding remarks, Minister Swapon pledged that the government would take a comprehensive approach to reform by evaluating recommendations from all previous media reform reports.
