As the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte commences, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the dangers of spreading misinformation and inciting civil unrest. PNP chief Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. signaled a proactive stance on Monday, ordering his units to prioritize the integrity of the nation’s democratic processes by curbing any rhetoric that could escalate into real-world violence. This directive marks a significant move by law enforcement to head off potential volatility surrounding the high-stakes political proceedings.

To ensure comprehensive oversight, Chief Nartatez has mobilized the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG), alongside various intelligence units and regional offices. These divisions have been instructed to intensify their monitoring of online behavior, specifically targeting digital content that threatens government institutions or individual public officials connected to the trial. The PNP has transitioned to 24/7 cyber patrolling, aiming to swiftly identify and neutralize malicious narratives that are intentionally designed to manipulate public perception and sow discord during this politically sensitive period.

On the physical front, the PNP has executed a massive security deployment, with approximately 6,000 personnel stationed around the Senate complex and other strategic locations. This heavy presence is intended to serve a dual purpose: securing the immediate perimeter of the impeachment proceedings and providing crowd management for anticipated public demonstrations. By maintaining a visible and prepared force on the ground, the PNP is signaling that it is ready to manage both the expected political theater and the potential for spontaneous public gatherings.

Beyond general observation, the PNP has mandated that local police commanders take aggressive steps to validate and combat viral false information. Recognizing that misinformation can rapidly evolve into panic or public disorder, commanders have been directed to verify reports in their respective jurisdictions immediately. Nartatez emphasized the importance of public discernment, urging citizens to verify any information they encounter against official government channels before sharing it, thereby avoiding the common trap of being used as an instrument by those aiming to disrupt the rule of law.

The nature of the police response is grounded in the goal of preserving national stability while navigating a hyper-partisan climate. By framing misinformation as a direct threat to public safety, the PNP is positioning itself as a guardian of democratic integrity. The focus on “neutralizing” narratives that seek to undermine state institutions reflects a growing concern among security officials that digital agitation could potentially lead to physical confrontations, necessitating a rigorous and constant vigilance throughout the duration of the impeachment trial.

Concluding his address, Chief Nartatez underscored the imperative of institutional neutrality, stressing that the PNP remains committed to professional, non-partisan operations. He reiterated that the force’s primary mandate is to maintain peace, ensure the safety of all citizens, and protect the sanctity of democratic processes, regardless of the political parties involved. By steering clear of the ideological crossfire of the impeachment, the PNP aims to fulfill its role as an impartial arbiter of order as the country enters this significant and potentially divisive political milestone.
