In a strategic move to sanitize the Nigerian digital media landscape, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in collaboration with the Art for Humanity Foundation, has launched the “Youth Creative Lab.” This pilot initiative is specifically designed to mentor early-career documentary photographers, filmmakers, student journalists, and content creators. By focusing on this demographic, the project seeks to cultivate a new generation of media professionals capable of navigating the complex digital age with high ethical standards and a commitment to factual accuracy.

The launch, which took place during a three-day hybrid workshop in Abuja, addresses the urgent need for responsible media practice in an era where digital platforms have fundamentally altered information consumption. Executive Director of the Art for Humanity Foundation, Osaze Efe, emphasized that the lab is built on the belief that empowered youth act as catalysts for societal progress. He noted that the partnership with UNESCO aims to move beyond basic technical skill acquisition, instead focusing on nurturing “responsible visual storytellers” who leverage their creative talents to strengthen community bonds and promote social accountability.

The workshop highlighted the critical intersection between visual storytelling and ethics. Facilitator Apochi Owoicho underscored that professional visual journalism extends far beyond capturing compelling images; it requires an unwavering commitment to truth, the preservation of subject dignity, and a profound understanding of how visual media shapes public perception. By grounding young creators in these values, the program aims to counteract the rising tide of manipulated images, deepfakes, and unverified reporting that currently threaten democratic participation and social cohesion across Nigeria.

To effectively combat the spread of misinformation, the Youth Creative Lab integrates specialized training in Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy. These modules are intended to provide participants with the analytical tools needed to critically evaluate the deluge of online content and utilize emerging technologies ethically. By fostering a deep understanding of global standards in journalism, the initiative prepares these young professionals to serve as a reliable line of defense against the viral disinformation campaigns that often undermine public trust.

The initiative’s structure is comprehensive, moving beyond theoretical training to provide practical, hands-on experience through a four-phase program. Following the initial three-day workshop, participants are engaging in institutional exposure through field visits to prominent television stations and civil society organizations. This is followed by a two-month internship program running through September, which will culminate in the production of collaborative multimedia projects. These works are slated for public exhibition during the upcoming 10th Abuja Photo Festival and the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Week.

By gathering 20 diverse early-career practitioners, the Youth Creative Lab is effectively building a vibrant community of storytellers dedicated to the public interest. Organizers—including representatives from UNESCO Abuja, the International Media and Information Literacy Institute, and the Africa Change Lab—view this as a sustainable model for media development. As these participants transition into the professional sphere, their work will serve as a benchmark for integrity, demonstrating how high-quality multimedia storytelling can bridge the gap between creative expression and the pursuit of objective truth.
