Research conducted by the digital marketing agency Hallam reveals that deepfake influencer accounts, designed to mimic the appearance and authority of medical professionals, are amassing millions of views by disseminating debunked health myths. Medical leaders, including Dr. Emma Runswick of the British Medical Association, have publicly demanded that platforms like TikTok take more rigorous action to curb the spread of this misinformation, warning that failure to act could have life-altering or even fatal consequences for unsuspecting users.
The study, which analyzed over 1,100 high-performing videos, found that 40% of top health-related content on the platform is either AI-generated or AI-assisted. For specific queries such as “health tips,” this figure spikes to 84%. The content produced by these digital avatars often promotes dangerous pseudoscience, including unfounded claims that routine behaviors—such as microwaving food in plastic containers or sleeping near a mobile phone—cause cancer. These narratives directly contradict the established medical guidance provided by organizations like Cancer Research UK and the NHS, which have repeatedly labeled social media misinformation a critical public health risk.
Beyond spreading abstract myths, these AI influencers are actively marketing bizarre and potentially harmful remedies. Investigators found videos promoting concoctions like Coca-Cola mixed with onions for pain relief, as well as a completely fabricated product branded as “Hyalethinap Plus Pro Max.” Deepfake avatars have been recorded deceptively claiming to have prescribed this non-existent product to patients for years, promising cures for everything from hair loss to joint pain. These tactics represent what researchers at UCL call the “industrialized exploitation of trust,” where sophisticated technology is leveraged to prioritize clicks and commercial gain over human well-being.
The medical community has expressed profound alarm at the ripple effects of this trend. Professor Frankie Swords, national medical director at NHS England, noted that clinicians are increasingly reporting patients who arrive at appointments confused or distressed by medical advice gleaned from social media algorithms. Similarly, Professor Victoria Tzortziou Brown of the Royal College of GPs emphasized that the lack of critical media literacy among the general public leaves millions susceptible to these fraudulent claims. With approximately one in five people now relying on social media as a primary source for health information, the danger of being misled by high-quality AI simulations is at an all-time high.
As the debate intensifies, stakeholders are calling for stricter governance of AI content on social media platforms. William Pett of Healthwatch England underscored the vital need for the public to develop better digital literacy skills, noting that without the ability to distinguish between expert guidance and commercial propaganda, individuals are vulnerable to advice that can severely jeopardize their health.
