A viral video circulating on social media has sparked significant misinformation regarding the upcoming 2026 Australian census. The video claims that householders are required to complete 21 pages of documentation for every individual who normally resides at their address but is not present on census night. However, an investigation by AAP FactCheck has debunked this assertion, confirming that the claim is entirely false. Official data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) confirms that the entire 2026 census document is 26 pages long and requires only minimal input regarding absent household members.

According to the ABS, the census is designed for individuals to complete wherever they are staying on the night of August 11, 2026, rather than requiring the primary household to fill out comprehensive forms for those away. The actual process for accounting for absent residents is contained within a single page (page 24) of the 2026 form. This section consists of only four questions, most of which require simple check-box responses regarding basic demographic information such as name, date of birth, sex, Indigenous status, and student enrollment.

The misinformation campaign appears to be part of a broader trend of skepticism surrounding national data collection efforts. The same social media creator who spread the false census claims also alleged that New Zealand had officially scrapped its national census program. While the New Zealand government did introduce legislation in early 2026 to transition away from traditional five-yearly counts in favor of smaller annual surveys, that bill has stalled in parliament due to a lack of sufficient support.

The legislative hurdle in New Zealand remains significant, as the proposed changes require a 75 percent majority in parliament to pass. Following the withdrawal of support by the Labour Party, which expressed concerns regarding the accuracy and reliability of alternative data-gathering methods, the government is now legally obligated to prepare for a 2028 census under existing laws. While the government has yet to allocate specific funding for the 2028 project, reports confirm that the requirement for a national census remains in place, contradicting the claims made in the viral video.

In addition to spreading inaccuracies about form length and international census status, the video also questioned the government’s commitment to counting marginalized groups, specifically those experiencing homelessness. Critics in the social media comments suggested that the census process inherently excludes individuals without a fixed address. However, the ABS maintains comprehensive outreach strategies to ensure that the unhoused population is accurately represented in the national data set.

To address these concerns, the ABS employs staff to conduct face-to-face interviews with individuals sleeping rough on census night. Furthermore, the agency provides census materials directly to boarding houses, hotels, and emergency refuges to ensure that residents of these temporary accommodations are accounted for. Through these verified facts, the ABS and fact-checking organizations aim to dispel the growing wave of misinformation surrounding the census, emphasizing that the process is designed to be accessible and representative of all Australians.
