The Indian government, through the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, issued a comprehensive 10-point rebuttal this Friday to dismantle rising misinformation regarding the domestic E20 ethanol blending programme. Designed to incorporate 20 percent ethanol into gasoline, the initiative has recently faced intense social media scrutiny, characterized by unfounded claims of engine performance decay, ecological damage, and insurance complications. Official channels asserted that the programme stands on a foundation of rigorous scientific data, substantial international benchmarking, and established regulatory frameworks, aiming to provide absolute clarity to vehicle owners and the public.
A primary contention addressed by the ministry involved the environmental impact of ethanol production, particularly claims regarding excessive water usage. In response to viral narratives suggesting one liter of ethanol requires 10,000 liters of water, the government clarified that industrial distillers typically exhaust only 3 to 5 liters of processed water, with most plants successfully implementing Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems to facilitate recycling. Furthermore, the government emphasized a strategic shift toward maize—a crop requiring significantly less irrigation than paddy—which now constitutes over 40 percent of the nation’s ethanol supply, ensuring both food security and responsible water resource management.
Regarding mechanical and performance-related anxieties, the government leaned heavily on empirical data provided by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Extensive trials, covering 40,000 kilometers in passenger vehicles and 20,000 kilometers in two-wheelers, demonstrated no significant decline in drivability or engine health. While the ministry acknowledged that rubber components in older vehicles might necessitate earlier maintenance, it dismissed broader claims of widespread component corrosion. Furthermore, they confirmed that E20 fuel neither invalidates vehicle warranties nor compromises insurance policies, as confirmed by both automakers and leading insurance providers.
The government also took aim at bizarre, viral conspiracy theories that have circulated on social media, including the claim that the sugar content in fuel attracts insects like ants and bees. The ministry debunked this by explaining that the industrial distillation process completely removes residual sugars and introduces denaturants that effectively repel insects, while the overwhelming hydrocarbon scent of gasoline further ensures the fuel is not a biological attractant. Additionally, the ministry dismissed fabrications involving videos of raw sugarcane being mixed into fuel tanks, asserting that ethanol blending follows strict manufacturing standards and quality control protocols at every stage of production.
Legal and regulatory concerns, including claims that the government admitted the programme was an “experiment” during Supreme Court proceedings, were unequivocally rejected. The Attorney General’s office clarified that those courtroom discussions referred to specific contractual procurement provisions rather than the scientific validity of the E20 project. By referencing widespread adoption in nations like Brazil, the United States, and Japan, the ministry reaffirmed that E20 is a proven global industry standard rather than an unverified venture, providing a stable path for modernizing India’s transport sector.
Concluding its statement, the government underscored the economic and ecological victories achieved since the programme’s inception. Since 2014-15, the transition—which saw blending levels climb from a mere 1.5 percent to the current 20 percent target—has saved the nation over Rs 1.9 lakh crore in foreign exchange, expedited payments to farmers by over Rs 1.6 lakh crore, and successfully displaced 310 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil imports. With carbon dioxide emissions reduced by approximately 930 lakh metric tonnes, the ministry framed the E20 initiative as a vital component of India’s energy security and environmental goals, aiming to sustain these momentum-building achievements despite the noise of online falsehoods.
