Hydrologists in Romania are currently confronting a dual crisis: managing one of the lowest water levels ever recorded on the Danube River while simultaneously battling a surge of digital misinformation. Despite a season of relatively cool temperatures and localized rainfall, the Danube has plummeted to historic lows, severely hampering navigation and threatening regional energy security. While social media platforms have been flooded with conspiracy theories blaming artificial intelligence data centers or industrial water diversions for the decline, experts maintain that the root cause is a systemic, basin-wide drought that has gripped Central Europe for months.

The scale of the hydrological decline is evidenced by data from August, when the Danube entered Romania at Baziaș with a discharge of only 1,550 cubic meters per second—a significant deficit compared to long-term averages. By the time the river reached Călărași, it had gained only an additional 200 cubic meters per second from Romanian and Bulgarian tributaries. This disparity clarifies why rainfall within Romania’s borders has failed to act as a buffer; the rivers Jiu, Olt, and Argeș provide a minimal contribution to the Danube’s total volume, illustrating that the river’s health is primarily dictated by conditions hundreds of miles upstream.

The true drivers of the crisis are the Danube’s major northern tributaries, including the Inn, Sava, Drava, and Tisza, which normally provide over half of the river’s flow. Many of these waterways are currently suffering from such extreme drought that parts of the Drava riverbed have reportedly become walkable. This upstream collapse is compounded by a lack of winter snowfall in the Alps and Carpathians, which has significantly reduced the annual meltwater surge that typically sustains the Danube during the summer months. Hydrologists characterize this as a long-term consequence of climate change, which is actively reshaping water systems across the continent.

Concerns are particularly acute regarding the Cernavodă nuclear power plant, which relies on the Danube for cooling. With water levels approaching critical thresholds, officials are weighing emergency measures to divert flow from the Bala branch to ensure the plant’s cooling systems remain functional. This vulnerability is not new; experts note that the risk of drought-related disruptions at Cernavodă has been documented for over 15 years, yet a permanent infrastructure solution remains unaddressed. Hungary’s Paks nuclear facility has already faced operational shutdowns, underscoring the urgent regional risk to energy stability.

To combat the viral misinformation circulating online, hydrologists have provided a mathematical refutation of the claim that AI data centers are draining the river. Analysis shows that if all data centers across Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and Serbia operated at full capacity, their combined water consumption would translate to roughly 1.3 cubic meters per second—a negligible fraction of the Danube’s long-term average flow of over 4,000 cubic meters per second. Experts emphasize that while data centers may create localized management challenges, they are nowhere near the scale required to impact a major international waterway.

Ultimately, scientists argue that the Danube crisis is a clear signal that water must be treated as an increasingly scarce resource requiring sophisticated, basin-wide management rather than scapegoating technological infrastructure. The persistence of these myths detracts from necessary public discourse regarding irrigation, urban water usage, and the long-term planning required to survive in a warmer, drier climate. As navigation remains disrupted and historical relics—such as WWII shipwrecks—emerge from the receding waters, the message from the scientific community is clear: the river’s decline is a structural environmental reality that demands systemic policy reform.
