ABUJA – The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has issued a stern, renewed warning to the public regarding a persistent security and information breach involving an unauthorized social media account. Operating under the guise of an official entity on the platform X (formerly Twitter) as “Nigeria National Grid,” this rogue account has continued to disseminate misleading data and deceptive narratives concerning the status and operations of the national power grid, forcing NISO to take decisive action to protect its reputation and public trust.

In a formal press statement released this week, NISO reiterated its complete disassociation from the account in question, which was first flagged and reported by the organization on January 17, 2026. Despite the initial disclaimer, the unauthorized account continues to bypass safety protocols and masquerade as the primary voice of the national power infrastructure. NISO emphasized that there is no functional, legal, or administrative relationship between the government-mandated operator and the entities behind the impostor account.

The leadership of NISO was unequivocal in its condemnation of the deception, stating, “NISO does not own, manage, control, or operate the social media account on X bearing the name ‘Nigeria National Grid.’ We have no affiliation with this account.” The organization further clarified that the individuals or anonymous entities operating this channel are entirely unknown to NISO and possess no authorization whatsoever to communicate, provide updates, or issue statements on behalf of the institution responsible for the country’s high-voltage grid network.

Addressing the potential risks posed by this misinformation, the system operator urged the general public, domestic and international media organizations, and critical power sector stakeholders to exercise extreme caution. NISO stressed that any information, technical claims, or updates originating from the fake account are fraudulent and do not represent the official stance of the agency. The organization warned that relying on such unverified sources regarding grid health or power outages could lead to widespread public confusion and instability within the energy sector.

As the body legally mandated to oversee and manage the National Grid, NISO is reinforcing its commitment to transparency through strictly regulated communication protocols. To prevent further exposure to disinformation, the agency has clearly outlined its verified digital footprint. All authentic institutional communications, press releases, and grid performance reports are issued exclusively through NISO’s official channels: Facebook and LinkedIn (@Nigerian Independent System Operator), Instagram (@officialniso_ng), X (@OFFICIALNISO_NG), and its primary web portal at www.niso.org.ng.

Ultimately, this development highlights the growing challenge of digital impersonation in critical national infrastructure sectors. By urging stakeholders to verify all news items against their official channels, NISO is attempting to limit the reach of the rogue account and safeguard the integrity of the national power discourse. The organization remains on high alert and continues to monitor the deceptive platform to protect its mandate and ensure that Nigerians receive only accurate, verified information regarding the state of their national electricity infrastructure.
