Meta has officially entered into a controversial content-licensing agreement with the far-right media outlet Newsmax, a move intended to bolster the artificial intelligence capabilities across its vast suite of applications. Under the terms of this deal, Meta will utilize Newsmax’s extensive archives and reporting to provide answers for AI-driven queries on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. While Meta has framed these partnerships as a strategy to keep pace with the rapidly evolving AI landscape, the inclusion of a source frequently criticized for its editorial standards has sparked significant public concern regarding the integrity of information delivered to billions of users.

The decision has drawn intense scrutiny due to Newsmax’s well-documented history of promoting misinformation and conspiracy theories. Independent media watchdog NewsGuard, which evaluates news sites based on journalistic credibility, assigned Newsmax a score of just 20 out of 100, explicitly labeling it as an unreliable source that repeatedly violates basic reporting standards. Perhaps most notable is the outlet’s involvement in the 2020 election disinformation campaign, which ultimately forced Newsmax to pay out over $100 million to settle defamation lawsuits brought by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic.

Furthermore, critics argue that integrating such content into Meta’s AI models could legitimize falsehoods by presenting them through the authoritative voice of an automated assistant. The Center for Countering Digital Hate has previously identified Newsmax as a primary vector for climate change denial, and there is now a growing fear that Meta’s AI could inadvertently serve as a megaphone for similar debunked claims. By pulling data from sources with a track record of inaccuracy, the technology risks creating an algorithmic feedback loop where harmful misinformation is packaged as factual, objective answers for everyday users.

This deal is part of a broader, aggressive strategy by Meta to secure massive datasets to train its Large Language Models (LLMs). According to reporting by Popular Information, Meta has established a sprawling network of similar licensing agreements with a diverse range of publishers, including Fox News, News Corp, The Washington Examiner, and The Daily Caller. While these are joined by partnerships with more traditional news organizations like CNN and USA Today, the absence of any comparable deals with left-leaning or progressive media outlets has fueled accusations of political bias in how Meta is curating the “knowledge base” for its AI tools.

The stakes of this curation are particularly high given the reach of Meta’s ecosystem, which boasts more than 3.9 billion monthly active users. Because these AI features are being embedded directly into communication and social networking platforms, users are increasingly likely to rely on them for quick facts, news summaries, and information verification. If the underlying training data is fundamentally flawed, the AI’s ability to act as a neutral arbiter of information is compromised, potentially exacerbating the existing global crisis of media literacy and digital misinformation.

As Meta continues to accelerate its AI integration, the company has remained largely silent on the specific criteria used to select its partners. Meta has not provided an explanation for the evident imbalance in its media partnerships, nor has it detailed the guardrails it intends to implement to prevent its AI from regurgitating the disinformation found in its new archives. As the tech giant races to dominate the AI market, the partnership with Newsmax stands as a stark reminder of the ethical trade-offs inherent in building global information systems, where the drive for scale often conflicts with the duty to provide accurate and verifiable data.
