Estonia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs took a firm diplomatic stand this Wednesday by summoning Russia’s chargé d’affaires to formally deliver a note of protest. The move serves as a direct rebuke of the Kremlin’s sustained and systematic disinformation campaign, which has increasingly targeted Estonia and the wider Baltic region. By formally lodging this complaint, Tallinn is signaling its refusal to remain silent in the face of what it describes as a concerted effort by Moscow to undermine the sovereignty and reputation of its neighbors while attempting to deflect global scrutiny from its own actions.

The diplomatic note emphasizes that these false narratives are part of a broader tactical strategy designed to discredit Baltic democratic institutions. According to Estonian officials, Moscow’s aggressive propaganda machinery is intentionally attempting to distract the international community from Russia’s persistent and grave violations of international law. Specifically, Estonia identifies the ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine as the true source of regional instability, labeling the Russian disinformation efforts as a transparent attempt to gaslight the international community regarding the origin of current geopolitical tensions.

In a strong message issued to the Russian authorities, the Estonian government has demanded an immediate cessation of all threats and the circulation of fabricated allegations. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna reaffirmed Estonia’s status as a stable democracy governed strictly by the rule of law. He emphasized that Tallinn remains a steadfast adherent to international treaties and global norms, viewing any Russian claims suggesting otherwise as completely unfounded and indicative of the Kremlin’s desperate reliance on propaganda to preserve its narrative.

Beyond the regional disinformation battle, the Ministry utilized the meeting to register its strongest condemnation of Russia’s recent intensification of drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian centers. The impact of these offensives has been catastrophic, with recent reports indicating that 93 civilians have been killed and over 500 injured in the last week alone. Estonia’s decision to pair its protest over propaganda with a sharp condemnation of these strikes serves as a reminder that the war remains the central issue defining the current diplomatic impasse between Moscow and its Baltic neighbors.

Addressing swirling claims from Moscow that Baltic territory is being utilized to facilitate strikes against its sovereignty, Minister Tsahkna provided a definitive denial. He clarified that Estonia has never authorized the use of its territory or airspace for launching attacks against targets within Russia. By drawing a clear line, Tallinn is insulating itself from the Kremlin’s attempts to frame the Baltic states as active belligerents, thereby reinforcing their position as observers who are committed to the principles of defensive sovereignty rather than provocative escalation.

Finally, the Foreign Minister reiterated Estonia’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s inherent right to self-defense. Tsahkna concluded that the emergence of strikes against Russian military and economic infrastructure is a direct and logical consequence of Russia’s full-scale invasion. By framing Ukraine’s counter-strikes as a byproduct of Russian aggression rather than Western-led provocations, Estonia reaffirmed its geopolitical stance: that Russia is solely responsible for the destruction it has wrought and that attempts to shift blame via disinformation will fail to obscure the reality of the war.
