A recent study published in the journal PLOS Digital Health reveals a concerning trend regarding how public health information is consumed on social media: while the majority of TikTok content promotes sunscreen, videos containing medical misinformation garner significantly higher audience engagement. As global skin cancer rates continue to climb, researchers warn that the platform’s algorithm may be disproportionately amplifying contrarian narratives that discourage the use of one of our most effective preventative tools.

Led by Alessandro Marcon of the University of Alberta, the research team analyzed 971 of the most-viewed TikTok videos under key hashtags like #sunscreen, #spf, and #sunprotection. Their findings highlight a stark disconnect between the volume of content and its impact. While nearly 87% of the videos analyzed were Pro-Sunscreen, the small percentage of videos making false, alarmist claims—suggesting that sunscreen is toxic or unnecessary—consistently outperformed educational content in terms of likes, shares, and comments.

The study suggests that the “viral potential” of misinformation is driven by its ability to provoke strong reactions. Content that challenges established medical consensus by branding sunscreen as a source of harm or an obstacle to essential vitamin D absorption is inherently more shocking than standard safety messaging. Consequently, these fringe theories are being pushed into the feeds of wider audiences, potentially undermining public health initiatives in a digital space where young people are particularly impressionable.

Interestingly, the researchers noted that even the overwhelmingly positive content often fails to hit its mark. While creators are eager to push sunscreen as part of complex beauty and skincare regimens, the focus is almost exclusively on cosmetic outcomes—such as anti-aging or skin texture—rather than life-saving health benefits. A startling 94% of the videos analyzed did not explicitly mention the primary medical reason for using sunscreen: the reduction of skin cancer risk.

This indicates a significant missed opportunity for public health advocacy on the platform. By framing sunscreen strictly as a vanity product, the skincare influencer community is inadvertently stripping away the urgency needed to address the growing global skin cancer crisis. According to the study, the emphasis on aesthetics over health means that even the most “pro-sunscreen” content fails to provide the critical context necessary for effective sun safety.

Ultimately, the authors conclude that while TikTok is not necessarily “flooded” with misinformation, the disproportionate resonance of false claims remains a serious concern for dermatologists and health officials. Moving forward, they advocate for a more strategic approach to health communication, urging health experts to create more engaging content that bridges the gap between cosmetic appeal and vital, evidence-based skin safety.
