Google India Vows to Combat Misinformation and Deepfakes in the Age of AI

New Delhi, June 18, 2025 – In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), Google India has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the growing menace of misinformation and deepfakes. Preeti Lobana, Country Manager and Vice President of Google India, acknowledged the transformative power of AI while highlighting the urgent need to address its potential downsides. The Asia Pacific region, in particular, has become a hotbed for scams, fraud, and misinformation, prompting Google to intensify its efforts in curbing misleading and fake content. Lobana stressed the importance of a multi-pronged approach, encompassing strong policies, advanced AI technology, and robust human oversight, to systematically address these challenges.

Central to Google’s strategy is the imminent launch of the ‘Google Safety Engineering Centre’ in India, a dedicated hub for combating online threats. This initiative underscores Google’s recognition of India’s significance in the global fight against misinformation. The company is also actively developing cutting-edge technologies, such as SynthID, to watermark and verify AI-generated content. SynthID embeds an invisible watermark within AI-created content, making it detectable even after editing or sharing. This technology empowers users to identify synthetic or AI-generated videos through a dedicated SynthID verifier, promoting transparency and accountability in the digital realm.

Google recognizes that combating misinformation requires collaborative efforts. The company actively collaborates with partners to enhance content authenticity and build trust. Lobana emphasized the importance of ecosystem-wide cooperation, recognizing that misinformation transcends individual platforms and necessitates collective action. Google’s commitment to collaboration is further exemplified by the unveiling of the Google Safety Charter for India’s AI-led transformation. This charter serves as a blueprint for addressing online challenges through partnerships, focusing on user safety, cybersecurity infrastructure protection, and responsible AI development.

The rise of AI, while unlocking unprecedented creative potential, has also fueled a surge in misinformation and deepfakes. These manipulated media, often indistinguishable from genuine content, pose a significant threat to individuals and society. Google’s proactive approach involves watermarking AI-generated content using SynthID, enabling wider detection and verification. This effort aims to empower users and stakeholders to identify and flag potentially harmful content. Lobana acknowledged the ongoing nature of this fight, emphasizing that tackling misinformation and deepfakes is a continuous process requiring vigilance and adaptation.

Beyond technological solutions, Google emphasizes the importance of robust policies and human oversight in its fight against misinformation. Clear guidelines and protocols are essential to ensure responsible content moderation and prevent the spread of harmful narratives. Human oversight complements technological interventions by providing nuanced judgment and context, recognizing that algorithms alone cannot address the complexities of online misinformation. This combination of technology and human expertise forms a crucial pillar in Google’s comprehensive approach.

Google’s commitment extends beyond its own platform. The company actively collaborates with industry peers, researchers, and policymakers to develop best practices and share insights in the fight against misinformation. This collaborative approach recognizes the interconnected nature of the online ecosystem and the need for collective action. By fostering partnerships and engaging in open dialogue, Google aims to strengthen the collective defense against misinformation and its detrimental consequences. The company remains steadfast in its pursuit of a safer and more trustworthy online environment for all.
