The incident, initially portrayed as a targeted attack, has been debunked by police investigations, revealing a narrative fueled by fabricated social media posts and online news reports. The genesis of the misinformation can be traced to a WhatsApp group called “Muslim Yuva Balaga,” where a user named Ziyad Ummi posted a message claiming that two Muslim youths had been targeted in a stabbing incident in Sajipanadu. The Bantwal Rural police, recognizing the potential for public unrest and the spread of fear based on inaccurate information, registered a case against Ummi under Section 240 of the Bombay Native Summary (BNS), which addresses the provision of false information regarding an offense.
