India Strikes Back: Operation Sindoor and the Ensuing Disinformation War

New Delhi, May 8 – In the aftermath of India’s decisive counterterrorism operation, Operation Sindoor, a wave of disinformation emanating from Pakistan has attempted to cloud the narrative surrounding the strikes. The operation, launched on Wednesday, targeted nine high-value terrorist targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), a direct response to the horrific April 22nd terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians. While the operation marked a significant victory in India’s ongoing fight against cross-border terrorism, Pakistan’s response has been characterized by a concerted campaign of misinformation and fabricated content spread through state-linked media outlets and social media accounts.

The disinformation campaign, primarily disseminated through platforms like X (formerly Twitter), leveraged a range of tactics, including manipulated videos, outdated footage, and outright fabricated claims. One of the most egregious examples involved a video purporting to show a Pakistani airstrike on an Indian military base in Amritsar. The video, depicting a massive fire engulfing the night sky, was quickly debunked by independent analysts and India’s official fact-checking bodies. The footage was identified as originating from a 2024 wildfire in Valparaiso, Chile, bearing no relation to any military action in the region. Despite being exposed, the video continued to circulate amongst pro-Pakistani accounts, highlighting the deliberate and persistent nature of the disinformation campaign.

The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check division swiftly responded to the false narrative, issuing a "Pakistan Propaganda Alert" and urging the public to rely solely on official government sources for accurate information. Despite these efforts, numerous accounts linked to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistani military, persisted in disseminating the debunked video and other fabricated content. This coordinated effort extended beyond anonymous accounts, with influential political figures within Pakistan amplifying the misinformation, further contributing to the spread of false narratives.

The disinformation campaign employed a variety of tactics beyond the manipulated wildfire video. Several images and videos shared by Pakistani sources were either digitally altered or taken out of context from unrelated incidents, often years old. These manipulated media were presented as evidence of Pakistani retaliation and military prowess, creating a false narrative designed to counter the impact of India’s successful operation. This strategy, according to experts, is not a novel approach but rather a well-established tactic employed by Pakistan’s state-linked media apparatus.

Experts tracking the flow of disinformation have identified a pattern in Pakistan’s information warfare strategy. The use of manipulated content, including outdated war footage and repurposed disaster videos, serves a dual purpose: to project an image of strength and parity with India, and to deflect attention from the successes of Indian military operations. This tactic aims to maintain a psychological narrative of defiance and resilience, both domestically and internationally, particularly in the wake of high-impact Indian military actions like Operation Sindoor. This coordinated effort reflects a deliberate attempt to shape public perception and control the narrative surrounding the conflict.

The Indian government has responded to the deluge of misinformation by reiterating its appeal to the public and the press to rely exclusively on verified updates from official channels. Authorities have also emphasized the dangers of circulating unverified or fake news, highlighting the potential to incite unnecessary panic, mislead public opinion, and undermine national security. The ongoing disinformation campaign underscores the challenges posed by misinformation in the digital age, particularly in the context of geopolitical tensions and armed conflict. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of critical thinking, media literacy, and reliance on verified sources in navigating the complex information landscape.
