2024: A Year of Misinformation and Deepfakes

The year 2024 witnessed a significant surge in misinformation and deepfakes, particularly surrounding major political events like India’s Lok Sabha and assembly elections. This concerning trend, highlighted in the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report, posed a substantial threat to democratic processes by potentially undermining the legitimacy of elected governments. The report emphasized the immediate and long-term dangers of misinformation, ranking it among the top global risks alongside extreme weather events, social polarization, and cyberattacks. This digital deluge of falsehoods required concerted efforts from fact-checking organizations like Vishvas News to combat the spread of fabricated information.

Vishvas News, a leading fact-checking organization, published over 3,200 reports in 12 languages, debunking a wide range of false claims related to political, economic, and social issues. A significant portion of these fact-checks focused on the Indian elections, addressing misleading narratives, manipulated videos, and outright fabricated information. The organization exposed deepfake videos targeting prominent political figures like Amit Shah and Supriya Sule, demonstrating the increasing sophistication and potential impact of AI-generated misinformation. These deepfakes attempted to manipulate public opinion by falsely attributing statements and actions to these politicians.

Beyond the political arena, deepfakes also infiltrated the business and financial sectors. Fraudulent schemes employing synthetic audio and video of business magnates like Mukesh Ambani and Elon Musk were used to promote dubious investment platforms. These scams, promising unrealistic returns, preyed on unsuspecting individuals, highlighting the evolving nature of online fraud and the need for increased vigilance in the digital age. Vishvas News investigated and debunked around 40 such claims related to business and finance, including misleading information about income tax, currency notes, and GST.

The spread of misinformation wasn’t confined to India’s borders. The Israel-Hamas conflict and violence in Bangladesh fueled a wave of false narratives across social media platforms. AI-generated images and videos were used to distort the reality on the ground, further inflaming tensions and hindering efforts to understand the complex situations. Vishvas News actively countered these false narratives with verified information, providing crucial context and countering the spread of manipulated content.

The use of artificial intelligence to create and disseminate disinformation emerged as a dominant trend in 2024. Deepfakes evolved beyond mere political propaganda, impacting diverse sectors, including finance, health, and entertainment. Deepfake audio and video were used to spread politically motivated disinformation, promote fraudulent financial schemes, and even peddle fake health cures. This widespread misuse of AI technology underscores the urgent need for robust detection mechanisms and public awareness campaigns to mitigate the harmful effects of synthetic media.

In addition to deepfakes, Vishvas News addressed over 70 scam-related claims, exposing fraudulent schemes designed to steal financial information or manipulate users through clickbait tactics. These scams ranged from phishing websites mimicking legitimate businesses to misleading social media campaigns promising unrealistic rewards. While India lacks specific legislation targeting fake news, existing laws under the IT Act and Indian Penal Code are being used to combat misinformation and online fraud. The National Crime Records Bureau reported a significant number of cases related to the spread of fake news, highlighting the pervasiveness of this issue and the need for continued efforts to hold perpetrators accountable. The trend of deepfakes and misinformation demands a multi-pronged approach involving technological advancements in detection, legal frameworks for accountability, and media literacy programs to empower individuals to critically assess information online.
