Rural India’s Women Face Rising Tide of Gendered Disinformation

A groundbreaking collaboration between the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) and Chambal Media is shedding light on the escalating problem of gendered disinformation targeting women and gender-diverse individuals in rural India. The project, titled “Unpacking gendered disinformation in India: Deepening understanding and exploring countermeasures,” aims to expose the causes, trends, and impact of this online abuse while exploring effective countermeasures. This initiative is crucial as the digital landscape expands in rural India, bringing with it both opportunities and vulnerabilities, particularly for marginalized communities.

The urgency of this issue stems from the unique challenges faced by rural communities. Limited digital literacy, coupled with prevalent social and cultural norms restricting women’s access to technology, creates a fertile ground for disinformation to thrive. Women venturing online, whether for education, work, or personal expression, become easy targets for harassment, trolling, and malicious campaigns. This often leads to them abandoning online spaces altogether, further exacerbating their marginalization and hindering their ability to exercise their digital rights.

The insidious nature of gendered disinformation in rural areas lies in its ability to manifest in various forms, often masked within existing social structures. Online moral policing, manipulated images, and defamatory content, though not readily identified as “misinformation” or “disinformation” in local vocabulary, carry devastating real-world consequences, ranging from social stigma to restricted access to technology and economic opportunities. This insidious blending of online abuse with offline repercussions poses a significant threat to the safety and wellbeing of women in these communities.

The project partners, APC and Chambal Media, bring complementary strengths to this critical endeavor. APC’s expertise in technology and digital rights combines with Chambal Media’s deep-rooted connections within rural communities and its established platform, Khabar Lahariya – an all-women rural news network. This unique partnership aims to amplify the voices of rural women, bridging the gap between their lived experiences and broader discussions on disinformation, fostering dialogue, raising awareness, and empowering communities to combat this escalating threat.

This collaborative initiative will produce a four-part multimedia series disseminated through social media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn. The series will delve into the nuanced impact of gendered disinformation, exploring its propagation mechanisms, holding platforms accountable, and advocating for necessary change. It will feature firsthand accounts from rural women and incorporate expert insights to dissect the mechanics of disinformation and propose solutions. This multi-pronged approach seeks to empower rural communities with knowledge and resources to navigate the digital landscape safely and effectively.

Ultimately, this project strives to make digital spaces more inclusive and safe for all, particularly for women in rural India. By exposing the unique challenges they face, empowering them with knowledge, and building a network of support, this initiative endeavors to transform the digital landscape from a source of vulnerability into a platform for empowerment and positive social change. The project partners believe that access to technology must be coupled with digital literacy and safety measures to ensure that the digital revolution benefits all members of society, regardless of gender or location.
