New Online Resources Combat Extremism and Disinformation in Western Australia

Perth, Western Australia – In an era marked by the escalating threat of online extremism and disinformation, a new initiative has emerged to equip communities with the knowledge and tools to counter these harmful ideologies. The Curtin Extremism Research Network (CERN), with support from the U.S. Consulate General Perth and Curtin University’s Faculty of Humanities, has launched a series of free learning modules designed to empower community leaders, educators, law enforcement, and young people to recognize and address the complexities of extremism.

These comprehensive modules offer a readily accessible pathway to understanding the contemporary landscape of extremism, providing practical guidance for identifying and managing situations involving extremist behavior. Comprising five concise audio episodes, each ranging from 15 to 25 minutes, the modules delve into the core concepts of extremism, disinformation, conspiracy theories, racism, and the manosphere. Accompanying teaching slides and curated reading lists further enhance the learning experience, encouraging deeper exploration of these critical topics.

Dr. Ben Rich, Co-Director of CERN, emphasized the urgent need for open-sourced materials that tackle the pervasive issue of extremism and disinformation, recognizing their potential to disrupt social cohesion and compromise community safety. “Many individuals grappling with these issues often feel isolated and lack the necessary support and guidance,” Dr. Rich stated. “Our aim is to provide them with readily available resources that empower them to better understand and respond to these challenging situations.”

The modules address a broad spectrum of extremist manifestations, from conspiracy theories and racial and religious extremism to the concerning rise of online misogyny. By providing insights into the origins and dynamics of these phenomena, the resources aim to equip individuals with the skills to effectively counter these evolving challenges. Unlike traditional approaches that primarily focus on counterterrorism and national security perspectives, these modules adopt a broader lens. They delve into the underlying social, political, and economic factors that contribute to the current climate of extremism, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the root causes.

The development of these resources underscores CERN’s commitment to research-driven solutions. The modules draw upon the network’s extensive research into the complex interplay of factors fueling extremism, ensuring a nuanced and informed approach to tackling this multifaceted issue. The accessibility of these free, downloadable resources further amplifies their impact, empowering individuals and communities to proactively address the challenges posed by extremism and disinformation.

The launch of these learning modules represents a significant step forward in combating the insidious spread of extremist ideologies. By equipping individuals with the knowledge and tools to identify, understand, and respond to these threats, the initiative fosters a more resilient and informed community, better prepared to safeguard against the disruptive forces of extremism and disinformation. The freely available format ensures widespread accessibility, maximizing the potential for positive change and strengthening community resilience in the face of these complex challenges. This initiative is not just about providing information; it’s about empowering individuals to become agents of change, fostering a more secure and harmonious society for all.
