The dramatic expansion of data centers across Europe has triggered a new wave of social media misinformation, with false and exaggerated claims about animal deaths quickly shaping public opposition to digital infrastructure projects. From unverified photos of dead fish to fabricated reports of mass bird mortality, misleading narratives are being used to fuel backlash against hyperscale facilities in several countries. Central European Digital Media Observatory (CEDMO), a network of fact-checkers and media researchers, has documented dozens of viral posts connecting data centers to animal casualties. In most cases, the claims are either completely false, based on misidentified footage, or drawn from unrelated industrial incidents. Yet these narratives continue to spread, influencing local planning decisions, stoking protests, and creating a climate of suspicion around one of the most critical technologies of the modern economy. The phenomenon underscores how genuine environmental anxiety can be hijacked by misinformation, especially when complex infrastructure projects arrive in communities that have limited access to transparent, verifiable information.
The root causes of the backlash lie in the extraordinary growth of data centers driven by cloud computing, video streaming, and the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence. Governments and technology companies are racing to build new facilities across Europe, from the Nordics to Southern Europe, supported by billions in investments and ambitious digital agendas. These centers are necessary to support everyday services such as banking, healthcare, remote work, and communication, as well as the emerging AI workloads that require enormous amounts of processing power and electricity. However, the physical footprint is significant: data centers require large tracts of land, extensive water supplies for cooling, and reliable connections to power grids already under strain from decarbonization. In regions experiencing drought, water scarcity becomes a particularly sensitive issue. Residents see cooling towers and hear generators; they worry about nearby rivers and wildlife habitats. These are legitimate concerns, and environmental impact assessments do raise real trade-offs between digital progress and ecological preservation. The problem is that misinformation builds on these fears, replacing nuanced debate with fabricated horror stories that portray every data center as an ecological disaster zone.
One of the most common false narratives involves mass fish kills. Viral posts have claimed that cooling water discharged by data centers contaminates local rivers, causing hundreds of dead fish to appear downstream. Fact-checkers at CEDMO have traced multiple such images to old photographs or to events completely unrelated to data centers, including industrial spills in other countries and natural oxygen-depletion events caused by heatwaves. Another recurring claim involves birds: social media users have shared videos of large numbers of dead birds near buildings, alleging that bright lights, electromagnetic fields, or chemical emissions from data centers are responsible. Investigation has found that several videos were filmed during annual migration collisions with glass buildings in urban areas, not at data center sites. Even more bizarre stories circulate among conspiracy-oriented accounts, such as claims that data centers are secretly releasing toxins that cause mutations in frogs or that cooling pools attract and then poison deer. CEDMO researchers found no scientific evidence for any of these assertions. In the few documented cases where wildlife was found near data center facilities, the causes were natural diseases, existing agricultural pesticides, or unrelated weather events. This does not mean data centers have zero environmental impact, but it does mean the specific claim that they are causing large-scale animal deaths is not supported by evidence.
Nevertheless, it is important to not dismiss all concerns. Data centers do consume large amounts of energy, and their water use can be considerable, especially in warmer climates. Cooling systems can withdraw significant volumes of freshwater, and if not carefully managed, this can affect aquatic ecosystems by altering water temperature, flow, and chemistry. Construction activities also disturb soil and habitat, and noise can disrupt wildlife in the immediate vicinity. The true challenge lies in finding ways to minimize these impacts while still meeting the demand for digital services. Some operators have invested in advanced cooling technologies that recycle water or use air-based systems, and new facilities increasingly run on renewable energy. However, these measures add cost and require strong regulatory oversight. The key point is that animal death is not the right lens through which to evaluate data center impacts. Sensational images of dead animals are cognitively powerful, so they spread rapidly and create an impression of systemic harm. By contrast, careful analyses of water consumption, carbon emissions, and land-use planning are difficult to convey in short social media posts. This asymmetry makes information ecosystems vulnerable to manipulation, and it explains why fact-checking alone is not enough to counter the backlash generated by these emotional appeals.
The spread of misinformation about data centers and animal deaths is being amplified by a strange alignment of forces. Local protesters, anxious about the arrival of large technology campuses, often share unverified warnings in their community social media groups. Political actors, including populist leaders and anti-climate groups, see the issue as a way to attack both environmentalism and big tech, so they selectively promote false stories that fit their narratives. Foreign disinformation operations have also seized on the issue, because undermining trust in Western digital infrastructure fits their broader strategic goals. Meanwhile, social media platforms reward engagement, and gruesome images of animals generate high click-through rates, regardless of accuracy. Once a false claim goes viral, corrections rarely travel as fast or as far as the original misinformation. This creates a situation where public discourse is dominated by rumors, and even credible environmentalist groups find it difficult to be heard above the noise. The result is often a polarization between two camps: one that denies any degree of environmental harm, and another that believes every data center is a mass killer of wildlife. Both positions are wrong, but the latter is far more likely to influence local planning meetings and political campaigns because of its emotional appeal.
Addressing this misinformation requires both better digital literacy and more transparent infrastructure policy, argues CEDMO. Fact-checkers are working continuously to debunk viral claims, but their reach is limited. Media education programs should teach citizens how to reverse-search images, verify sources, and recognize emotional manipulation. At the same time, data center companies need to engage proactively with local communities, publishing independent environmental audits in accessible language and organizing site visits. Rather than simply issuing press releases, they should invite skepticism and answer questions directly. Regulators should require real-time monitoring of water and air quality, with public dashboards so that residents can see actual environmental data. This would narrow the space for misinformation because claims can be checked against transparent information. Ultimately, data centers are not on the verge of killing the animal world, but they are also not free of environmental costs. The public deserves an honest, evidence-based discussion about how to balance the digital future with ecological sustainability. Misinformation about dead animals is not only false; it prevents that honest discussion from taking place. By separating fact from fiction, CEDMO and similar organizations hope to ensure that public debate is based on reality, not viral sensation. The stakes are high—if misinformation continues to drive policy, societies may make poor choices about both environmental protection and technological progress.
