Cameroon Bishop Condemns Rising Tide of Hate Speech and Tribalism Ahead of Presidential Election

BAFOUSSAM, Cameroon – Bishop Paul Lontsié-Keuné of the Catholic Diocese of Bafoussam has issued a stark warning against the escalating spread of hate speech, tribalism, misinformation, and outright lies in Cameroon as the nation gears up for its presidential election in October. In a powerful message addressed to the faithful, the Bishop expressed deep concern that these divisive forces pose a grave threat to peace and national unity, jeopardizing the prospects of a peaceful and credible election.

Bishop Lontsié-Keuné’s message, shared with ACI Africa, underscores the urgency of addressing this alarming trend. He unequivocally condemned the toxic climate of misinformation and manipulation, emphasizing that true and lasting peace cannot be built upon such foundations. He pointed to the instrumentalization of law and the flexible interpretation of legal principles for political gain as further obstacles to achieving a just and peaceful society.
