Bangladesh Chief Adviser Calls on UN to Combat Disinformation and Uphold Media Ethics

DHAKA, Bangladesh – In a meeting with UNESCO representatives, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus urged the United Nations to take a more proactive role in combating the pervasive issue of disinformation and promoting ethical standards within the media landscape. Yunus stressed the urgency of addressing the “continuous bombardment” of fake news, originating both domestically and internationally, which he described as a major challenge facing Bangladesh. He highlighted the need for the UN to engage not only with government bodies but also directly with media organizations to tackle the problem effectively. The meeting took place in anticipation of the release of a joint UNDP-UNESCO report assessing the state of media freedom and pluralism in Bangladesh.

Professor Yunus welcomed the forthcoming report and emphasized the critical role of independent regulation in holding media outlets accountable for spreading disinformation. He underscored the importance of the UN’s voice in upholding media integrity, stating that if a media outlet persistently disseminates false information, it should be flagged as untrustworthy. The Chief Adviser expressed his faith in the influence of the UN, urging the organization to lend its support to Bangladesh in combating this critical issue. He believes that a clear message from the UN regarding the importance of accurate reporting would carry significant weight and encourage media outlets to prioritize factual information.

UNESCO Representative Susan Vize acknowledged the Chief Adviser’s concerns and affirmed that the report would address the issue of self-regulation within the media sector. She highlighted the report’s focus on identifying both strengths and weaknesses within Bangladesh’s media landscape, offering recommendations aligned with international standards. Vize emphasized the importance of training government officials, law enforcement, and the judiciary to ensure their practices align with these standards, promoting a more consistent and responsible approach to media regulation. This comprehensive approach, she explained, aims to improve the overall media ecosystem in Bangladesh by addressing the systemic challenges and fostering a culture of accountability.

Mehdi Benchelah, UNESCO Senior Project Officer, added that the report would also address the crucial issue of journalists’ working conditions, a global concern, and the specific safety challenges faced by female journalists in newsrooms. He noted the significant impact that government actions can have on these matters, suggesting that policy changes and initiatives could significantly improve the professional environment for journalists. The report, developed under the umbrella of UNDP’s Strengthening Institutions, Policies and Services (SIPS) project and aligned with UNESCO’s mandate, aims to contribute to a more free, independent, and pluralistic media landscape in Bangladesh. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both organizations to fostering a robust and responsible media sector.

Professor Yunus’s appeal to the UN highlights the growing global concern over the spread of disinformation and its potential to undermine democratic processes and societal harmony. His call for a more active UN role in combating this issue reflects the need for international cooperation and coordinated efforts to address the challenges posed by fake news. The forthcoming UNDP-UNESCO report is expected to provide valuable insights into the specific context of Bangladesh’s media landscape, offering recommendations for strengthening media freedom and promoting responsible journalism.

The report’s findings and recommendations will be critical in guiding future interventions to address the issue of disinformation and enhance the credibility and ethical standards of media organizations in Bangladesh. The collaborative effort between UNDP and UNESCO underscores the importance of a multi-faceted approach involving government action, media self-regulation, and international support. The ultimate goal is to foster a media environment that upholds the principles of freedom of expression while safeguarding against the harmful effects of disinformation. The combined focus on media freedom, ethical practices, and the safety of journalists signals a comprehensive approach to strengthening the media landscape in Bangladesh.
