Usha Uthup Champions the Power of Books at Kolkata Literary Festival

Kolkata, India – Renowned Indian pop icon Usha Uthup inaugurated the 16th edition of the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival (AKLF) with a passionate call for a return to the enduring power of literature. In a world increasingly dominated by fleeting social media posts, Uthup emphasized the unique and lasting impact of books on young minds. She urged the younger generation to rediscover the joy of reading and reconnect with their literary roots, highlighting the profound experience that books offer, an experience that transcends the ephemeral nature of digital content. Her presence, punctuated by captivating renditions of both traditional and contemporary music, added a vibrant touch to the literary proceedings, blending the worlds of music and literature seamlessly.

Uthup’s inaugural address highlighted the importance of the AKLF as a platform for literary exchange and cross-disciplinary dialogue. She expressed her delight at being part of a gathering that brought together literary luminaries, artists, and thinkers from around the globe. The festival, she emphasized, provides a fertile ground for the exchange of ideas and the celebration of creative expression in its diverse forms. Reflecting on her own journey and evolving relationship with literary events, Uthup humorously recalled her initial apprehension about being a pop singer in a literary setting. This initial hesitation, she recounted, eventually transformed into a comfortable embrace, showcasing the festival’s inclusive and welcoming spirit.

The veteran singer, whose vibrant career spans over five decades, also shared insights into her musical journey. She acknowledged the crucial role of her team, sound technicians, and camera operators in supporting her performances, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the artistic process. Recognizing the reciprocal relationship between artist and audience, Uthup paid tribute to her listeners, acknowledging their indispensable role in her success. "We can’t do anything without our audiences," she stated, underscoring the vital connection that fuels artistic endeavors.

Sharing the stage with Uthup was model and fitness icon Milind Soman, who discussed his book "Keep Moving," co-authored with his mother, Usha, and wife, Ankita. Soman, approaching his 60th birthday, offered a holistic perspective on fitness, defining it not as a competitive pursuit but as the ability to fully embrace and experience life, both physically and mentally. He recounted his personal fitness journey, from competitive swimming in his youth to his transformative experience with the Mumbai Marathon in 2004. It was this marathon, he explained, that ignited his passion for running and proved to himself and others the potential of Indian athletes.

Continuing his advocacy for fitness, Soman spoke passionately about Pinkathon, a women’s running event he founded. He highlighted the initiative’s aim to create a safe and inclusive environment for women to engage in fitness activities, free from judgment and pressure. This initiative, he emphasized, empowers women to prioritize their well-being and embrace physical activity as a part of their lives. Soman’s presence at the festival further underscored the intersection of diverse fields, including literature, fitness, and social advocacy.

The three-day AKLF boasted an impressive lineup of over 120 speakers, encompassing established authors, emerging writers, poets, and prominent figures from various fields. This diverse array of participants reflected the festival’s commitment to inclusivity and its broad appeal to a wide range of literary interests. The program offered sessions catering to different genres and age groups, ensuring something for everyone, from poetry enthusiasts to young adult readers. This multifaceted approach made the festival a vibrant hub for literary exploration and celebration.

AKLF Director Anjum Katyal extended an invitation to all, emphasizing the festival’s bookstore-like atmosphere, offering both entertainment and intellectual stimulation. The festival, she explained, provides a platform for discovering new writers, exploring different genres, and engaging with diverse perspectives. This open and welcoming environment fosters a love for literature and celebrates the written word in all its forms. The AKLF stands as a testament to the enduring power of literature and its ability to connect people, inspire creativity, and spark meaningful conversations.
