Moldovan Youth Empowered to Combat Disinformation at Inaugural Information Resilience Camp
VADUL LUI VODĂ, Moldova – From August 1st to 3rd, nineteen young Moldovans converged at the scenic locale of Vadul lui Vodă for the first-ever Information Resilience Camp, a pioneering initiative designed to bolster their ability to navigate the increasingly complex landscape of information and disinformation. This dynamic program, a blend of engaging discussions, practical workshops, and immersive simulations, aimed to equip these young minds with the critical thinking skills and practical tools necessary to identify, debunk, and counteract the spread of disinformation within their respective communities.
The camp’s curriculum provided a deep dive into the mechanics of disinformation, its pervasive influence in the digital age, and the strategies for effectively combating it. Expert-led sessions, facilitated by prominent journalists, media experts, and influencers, including Victor Moșneag, Petru Macovei, Lilia Zaharia, Natalia Zaharescu, Cătălin Lungu, Teodora Panuș, Mihaela Melnic, and Anatolie Eșanu, offered participants invaluable insights into the evolving nature of disinformation tactics. The program explored the sophisticated methods employed in 2025, dissected the ownership and control of media outlets, emphasizing the importance of identifying credible sources, and delved into the significant role influencers play in either propagating or mitigating the spread of fake news. Furthermore, the sessions equipped participants with the skills to craft compelling and viral content that serves the public interest, effectively countering the manipulative narratives of disinformation campaigns.
A highlight of the camp was the innovative use of simulated scenarios, offering participants a unique opportunity to step into the shoes of those who manipulate information. These “fake campaign simulations” provided a crucial understanding of the tactics and motivations driving disinformation campaigns, empowering participants to effectively preempt and dismantle them. Complementing these simulations were practical video and social media workshops, focusing on the creation of engaging content tailored for popular platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. This hands-on experience enabled participants to translate complex information into easily digestible formats, maximizing their reach and impact within their communities.
The camp fostered an environment of active learning and engagement, empowering participants to not only recognize and debunk disinformation but also to become proactive agents of change within their communities. Alexandru Melnic, a participant, lauded the camp’s effectiveness, stating, “What I liked most about this camp was identifying fake news. I really enjoyed the deepfake exercise, and I think I’ll develop this topic further in my community centre.” This sentiment echoed across the camp, emphasizing the tangible impact of the program in equipping participants with the confidence and skills to combat disinformation at a local level.
The Information Resilience Camp, a collaborative effort between the Media-Guard Association and Ziarul de Gardă, and generously supported by the European Union, represents a crucial step toward fostering a more informed and resilient society. By empowering these young Moldovans with the knowledge and tools to critically assess information and combat disinformation, the program contributes significantly to building a stronger foundation for democracy and informed civic engagement. The camp’s success underscores the importance of investing in media literacy initiatives, particularly amongst youth, who are often the primary targets and vectors of online disinformation campaigns.
The ripple effect of this inaugural camp is expected to extend far beyond the immediate participants, as they return to their communities armed with the capacity to identify and debunk disinformation narratives. This initiative serves as a model for future programs aimed at building information resilience, demonstrating the empowering potential of education and engagement in combating the pervasive threat of misinformation. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, programs like the Information Resilience Camp will play an increasingly vital role in ensuring that citizens are equipped to navigate the complexities of information and actively participate in shaping a more informed and democratic future.
