Mississippi Wildlife Officials Combat Online Misinformation Regarding Baiting Regulations

Jackson, MS – The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) is issuing a stern warning to the public regarding a deceptive social media account spreading false information about baiting and feeding regulations on public hunting lands. This fraudulent account, designed to mimic the official MDWFP presence, falsely claimed that baiting and feeders would be permitted on all public hunting lands during the 2025-26 hunting season. MDWFP officials have categorically denied this claim, emphasizing that it is entirely fabricated and does not reflect the department’s policies or upcoming regulations. The agency urges hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to rely solely on verified MDWFP channels for accurate information.

The spread of misinformation poses a significant threat to the integrity of wildlife management and the safety of hunters. Baiting and feeding wildlife, while potentially attractive to some hunters seeking an advantage, can disrupt natural animal behaviors, concentrate wildlife in unnatural densities, increase the risk of disease transmission, and create unfair hunting conditions. MDWFP regulations are carefully crafted to maintain healthy wildlife populations and ensure ethical hunting practices. The false information disseminated by the imposter account undermines these efforts and could lead hunters into unknowingly violating the law.

MDWFP officials have expressed their frustration with the deceptive tactics employed by the fake account. The account’s creators intentionally designed it to resemble an official MDWFP platform, likely aiming to mislead unsuspecting hunters. This act of misinformation not only erodes public trust in the agency but also potentially jeopardizes the compliance of hunters who may mistakenly rely on the false information. The department is actively working to identify the source of the misinformation and take appropriate action.

The MDWFP is committed to providing clear and accessible information to the hunting community. The agency maintains an official website, regularly updated with current hunting regulations, season dates, licensing information, and other important resources. In addition, the MDWFP maintains verified social media accounts on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, which serve as direct channels for official announcements and updates. Hunters are strongly encouraged to subscribe to these channels and consult them regularly for the most accurate information.

The department stresses the importance of verifying information before sharing it, especially on social media. The rapid spread of misinformation online can have serious consequences, including legal repercussions for those who unknowingly violate regulations based on false information. Hunters are urged to exercise caution and critical thinking when encountering information about hunting regulations online. If there is any doubt about the validity of the information, contacting the MDWFP directly is the best course of action.

Baiting and feeding wildlife on public hunting lands in Mississippi remains a Class II violation, punishable by fines ranging from $100 to $500 and potential jail time of up to six months. The MDWFP is diligently working to counter the spread of misinformation and ensure that hunters have access to accurate and reliable information. The agency encourages the public to report any suspicious social media accounts or online content that appears to be falsely representing the MDWFP. By working together, hunters, conservationists, and the MDWFP can maintain ethical hunting practices and protect Mississippi’s valuable wildlife resources. The future of hunting depends on responsible behavior and informed decision-making, both of which are undermined by the spread of misinformation. The MDWFP remains dedicated to its mission of conserving wildlife and providing opportunities for sustainable outdoor recreation.
