Voice of Nigeria to Spearhead Fight Against Fake News, Promote Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda on Global Stage

Abuja, Nigeria – The Voice of Nigeria (VON), the nation’s external broadcaster, is poised to play a pivotal role in combating the spread of fake news, disinformation, and misinformation targeting Nigeria on the international stage. This was the core message delivered by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, at a management retreat held in Abuja. The Minister emphasized the critical need for VON to leverage its information assets to counter negative narratives and project the positive developments unfolding under President Tinubu’s administration. He stressed that VON’s role is crucial in shaping global perceptions of Nigeria and ensuring accurate information reaches international audiences. The Minister’s pronouncements underscore the government’s recognition of the damaging impact of fake news and its commitment to utilizing public broadcasting as a tool to defend the nation’s image and promote its progress.

The Minister urged VON to actively showcase Nigeria’s resurgence on the economic and political fronts, highlighting the country’s strides in tackling security challenges and fostering sustainable development. He specifically called on VON to broadcast the successes achieved in combating terrorism, banditry, and ethnic conflicts that have previously plagued the nation. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of communicating the government’s commitment to empowering the youth through initiatives such as the National Education Loans Fund (NELFUND), which provides access to quality tertiary education. The Minister’s directive emphasizes the government’s desire to portray a more accurate and positive image of Nigeria to the world, showcasing the nation’s progress and potential.

Central to VON’s mandate is the task of highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing energy transition, which aims to ensure a more sustainable and reliable supply of electricity and gas. This transition is crucial for powering homes, industries, and driving economic growth. The Minister emphasized the need for VON to effectively communicate the significance of this transition to international audiences, demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable development and a greener future. By showcasing these efforts, VON aims to attract foreign investment and foster partnerships in the energy sector.

The Minister’s address also touched upon the broader reforms being implemented under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He expressed confidence that the year 2025 will witness the consolidation of these reforms, which are already yielding positive results across various sectors of the economy. He stressed that public broadcasters, including VON, have a crucial role to play in projecting these successes and shaping public perception, both domestically and internationally. This underscores the government’s focus on utilizing public broadcasting to communicate its achievements and build public confidence in its agenda.

To effectively fulfill its mandate in the 21st century, the Minister urged VON to embrace emerging digital technologies to enhance the quality and reach of its content. He emphasized the need for VON to remain competitive in the crowded global media landscape by leveraging technology to deliver compelling and engaging content to a wider audience. This call for modernization reflects the government’s recognition of the evolving media landscape and the importance of adapting to new technologies to effectively reach target audiences.

The management retreat, themed "Voice of Nigeria in the 21st Century: Restructuring for Global Impact," provided a platform for strategic discussions on the future of the organization. The Director-General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), Olalekan Fadolapo, emphasized the importance of leadership in driving VON’s transformation. He highlighted that leadership is earned, not demanded, and stressed the need for a collaborative and team-oriented approach to achieve the organization’s goals. Former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, echoed this sentiment, urging the VON family to maintain unity and solidarity in projecting Nigeria’s voice to the world. These insights emphasized the importance of strong leadership and a unified team in effectively communicating Nigeria’s message to the global community. The retreat served as a crucial step in preparing VON for its expanded role in combating misinformation and promoting Nigeria’s positive narrative on the world stage.
