Vingroup Initiates Comprehensive Legal Action Against Online Misinformation

Vingroup Launches Legal Offensive Against Online Disinformation Campaign

Hanoi, Vietnam – Vingroup, Vietnam’s largest conglomerate and parent company of electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast, has initiated legal proceedings against 68 individuals and organizations accused of orchestrating a widespread disinformation campaign targeting the company’s reputation and financial stability. The lawsuits, filed in both domestic and international courts, represent a significant escalation in the fight against online defamation and highlight the challenges faced by corporations in controlling their narratives in the digital age. The campaign, disseminated primarily through social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, spread a range of false allegations, including claims of impending bankruptcy and the misrepresentation of VinFast vehicles as rebranded Chinese products.

The core of Vingroup’s legal action revolves around allegations of financial instability, with rumors circulating online that the company faced imminent bankruptcy with debts exceeding $30 billion. Vingroup vehemently denies these claims, asserting that its actual borrowings are significantly lower, around $10.7 billion, a figure the company deems “very safe” by international and Vietnamese financial standards. The company alleges that this misinformation was deliberately spread to undermine investor confidence and damage its reputation in the market.

Another major focus of the lawsuits concerns the origin of VinFast electric vehicles. Rumors circulated online suggesting that these vehicles were simply rebranded Chinese products, a claim that Vingroup strongly refutes. The company emphasizes that VinFast vehicles are manufactured in its state-of-the-art facility in HaiPhong, Vietnam, with a 60% localization rate in the production process. Vingroup has invited international journalists, including those from CleanTechnica, to tour the factory and witness its advanced manufacturing capabilities. This transparency underscores their commitment to countering false narratives about the origin and quality of their vehicles. VinFast has rapidly transitioned from producing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in partnership with BMW to becoming a fully electric vehicle manufacturer, marking a pioneering move in the global automotive industry.

Vingroup’s aggressive legal strategy extends beyond Vietnam’s borders. The company plans to collaborate with international legal teams to pursue cases in the countries of residence of the accused individuals. Furthermore, Vingroup intends to formally notify both foreign embassies in Vietnam and Vietnamese embassies abroad, framing the online attacks as violations of Vietnam’s Cybersecurity Law and Penal Code. This international approach signals a determined effort to hold those responsible for spreading disinformation accountable, regardless of their location.

The scale and scope of Vingroup’s legal response are unprecedented in Vietnam and potentially set a new benchmark for corporate action against online defamation in Southeast Asia, a region known for its comparatively relaxed approach to online content moderation where removal of content is the dominant strategy. Legal experts in the Philippines, familiar with business practices in the ASEAN region, consider Vingroup’s actions a significant departure from the norm, potentially influencing how other companies in the region address similar challenges in the future. Traditionally, companies in the region have relied on content takedown requests rather than legal action to combat online disinformation.

Vingroup’s diverse business portfolio extends beyond automotive manufacturing. The conglomerate encompasses a wide range of sectors, including resorts and hospitality with Vinpearl, residential real estate with Vinhomes, amusement parks and attractions with VinWonders, electric bus operation with VinBus, healthcare with Vinmec, pharmaceutical production with Vinfa, education with VinSchool and VinUniversity (in partnership with Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania), fintech with VinID, and artificial intelligence research with VinAI. This diversification demonstrates Vingroup’s substantial influence on the Vietnamese economy and underscores the potential impact of the disinformation campaign on its various business interests.

The lawsuits initiated by Vingroup represent a crucial test case in the ongoing battle against online misinformation. The outcome of these legal proceedings could significantly impact how corporations address similar issues in the future, particularly in regions where legal frameworks for dealing with online defamation are still evolving. The aggressive pursuit of legal action highlights the seriousness with which Vingroup views these allegations and its commitment to protecting its reputation and the integrity of its brands in the face of malicious online attacks. The company’s actions signal a growing trend among corporations to proactively combat online disinformation through robust legal measures, rather than relying solely on reactive strategies like content removal.
