UNC-Chapel Hill Researchers Launch AI-Powered Tool to Track Corporate Climate Action

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability in corporate climate action, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have developed a groundbreaking online tool, ChatNDC.org. Leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, ChatNDC, short for "Nationally Determined Contributions," aims to empower individuals, organizations, and policymakers with readily accessible and comprehensive data on climate commitments and progress. The tool’s innovative approach promises to revolutionize access to climate information, presenting complex data in a user-friendly, conversational format.

Led by Professor Angel Hsu, director of the Data-Driven Enviro-Lab, the research team has designed ChatNDC to mimic the functionality of popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT. This intuitive interface allows users to pose natural language queries about climate commitments, enabling seamless and efficient exploration of critical data. "ChatNDC uses AI technology to put information at your fingertips," explained Hsu. "You can simply ask, ‘What are the U.S.’s climate commitments? Are they ambitious enough? Will they mitigate the most dangerous effects of climate change?’" This conversational approach removes the barriers often associated with navigating dense datasets and empowers users to quickly grasp the complexities of corporate climate action.

The genesis of ChatNDC stems from a growing need for accessible and reliable climate data. The Paris Agreement, a landmark international accord on climate change, requires participating countries to submit Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), outlining their plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change impacts. However, accessing and interpreting these NDCs, along with the vast array of corporate commitments and reports, can be a daunting task. ChatNDC addresses this challenge directly, compiling and analyzing data from various sources to provide a comprehensive overview of climate action.

The development of ChatNDC was made possible through a $90,000 grant from the ClimateWorks Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating climate solutions. This funding has allowed the research team to build and launch the platform, which is set to become publicly available on Thursday. Professor Hsu emphasizes the urgency of addressing climate change and the critical role of data accessibility. "Climate change is a global crisis that demands immediate action," she stated. "ChatNDC empowers individuals with the knowledge they need to hold organizations accountable and drive meaningful change."

Looking ahead, the Data-Driven Enviro-Lab aims to transform ChatNDC into a real-time fact-checking platform for climate data. This ambitious vision will ensure the tool remains a reliable source of information, combating misinformation and promoting informed decision-making. By providing accurate and up-to-date data, ChatNDC will play a crucial role in fostering transparency and accountability, driving the global transition towards a sustainable future. Professor Hsu believes this tool will bolster public confidence in climate data, enabling informed discussions and accelerating progress towards climate solutions.

The launch of ChatNDC represents a significant advancement in the fight against climate change. By harnessing the power of AI, this innovative tool democratizes access to critical data, empowering individuals, organizations, and policymakers to make informed decisions. As the platform evolves into a real-time fact-checking resource, it promises to become an indispensable asset in the global effort to address climate change. ChatNDC’s user-friendly interface and comprehensive data coverage will undoubtedly contribute to a more informed and engaged public discourse on climate action, ultimately accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable future.
