Ukrainian Diaspora Leader in Portugal Urges Resistance Against Russian Disinformation

Lisbon, Portugal – Amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a prominent Ukrainian diaspora leader is sounding the alarm against a surge of Russian disinformation infiltrating Portuguese media. Pavlo Sadokha, Vice President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) for Southern Europe and President of the Union of Ukrainians in Portugal (UUP), has called upon Ukrainians to actively combat the spread of misleading narratives that distort the reality of the war. He stressed the urgency of countering these false narratives, which he characterized as part of a broader campaign originating with Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014.

Sadokha highlighted the insidious nature of this disinformation campaign, noting how it often masquerades as legitimate commentary within European media outlets. He criticized the “cunning editorial tactic” employed by some media organizations, which allows them to shift the responsibility for accuracy onto freelance commentators. This strategy, he argues, shields media outlets from legal accountability as courts in Portugal often interpret commentators’ opinions as protected speech under freedom of expression laws. This legal loophole, according to Sadokha, makes it difficult to directly challenge the spread of misinformation through legal channels.

The UUP president emphasized the importance of utilizing the “right of reply,” a legal tool available in Portugal that allows individuals and entities to challenge published misinformation. He urged all Portuguese-speaking Ukrainians to actively engage with media outlets that disseminate false information, initially by demanding a correction or retraction. Should the media outlet fail to respond appropriately, Sadokha advocated escalating the matter to Portugal’s national media regulator, providing a specific online resource for facilitating this process. He further underscored the availability of similar legal mechanisms in other countries, encouraging Ukrainian communities globally to actively defend the truth against distorted narratives.

Sadokha’s call to action reflects a broader concern within the Ukrainian diaspora about the insidious impact of Russian disinformation campaigns, particularly within European media landscapes. This disinformation, often presented under the guise of objective analysis or commentary, aims to sow confusion and undermine public support for Ukraine. By exploiting freedoms of expression and press, these campaigns attempt to manipulate public opinion and erode trust in credible news sources. This manipulation can have significant consequences, impacting international policy decisions and potentially swaying public sentiment against providing continued assistance to Ukraine.

The UUP’s proactive approach in combating disinformation emphasizes the importance of media literacy and the active participation of diaspora communities in defending the truth. By empowering Ukrainians to challenge false narratives and utilize legal tools available to them, the UUP aims to create a more informed public discourse. This proactive strategy, according to Sadokha, is crucial in countering the pervasive nature of disinformation and ensuring that accurate information about the conflict in Ukraine reaches the public.

The ongoing struggle against disinformation highlights the evolving nature of information warfare in the digital age. The ease with which misinformation can spread across borders underscores the need for robust legal frameworks and vigilant public engagement. Sadokha’s call to action serves as a reminder that the fight for truth extends beyond the battlefield and into the realm of public opinion, where informed citizens play a critical role in defending against the insidious erosion of facts by disinformation campaigns. This proactive approach, which combines legal recourse with grassroots activism, aims to safeguard the integrity of information and foster a more resilient and informed society.
