Ukrainian Authorities Block Access to Pro-Kremlin Producer Yuriy Bardash’s YouTube Channel

Kyiv, Ukraine – Access to the YouTube channel of Yuriy Bardash, a once-prominent Ukrainian music producer and singer who has become a vocal supporter of Russia’s invasion, has been blocked within Ukraine. The move, announced by the Center for Countering Disinformation and confirmed by the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), comes as part of a concerted effort by Ukrainian authorities to combat disinformation and protect national security amid the ongoing conflict.

Bardash, known for his work with popular Ukrainian musical groups like Quest Pistols, Griby, and Nervy, as well as his solo project YOURA, has undergone a dramatic transformation since the start of the full-scale war. Once a celebrated figure in the Ukrainian entertainment industry, he has since relocated to Russia, obtained Russian citizenship, and become an outspoken advocate for Russian aggression. His public pronouncements, disseminated primarily through his Telegram channel, have included calls for the capture of Ukrainian cities like Kyiv and Kharkiv, echoing Kremlin propaganda narratives and inciting outrage within Ukraine.

This overt support for the invasion has led to severe repercussions for Bardash in his native country. The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has initiated proceedings against him under four articles of the Criminal Code, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in April 2025, signed a decree imposing a range of sanctions. These sanctions encompass asset freezing, revocation of any state awards and honors previously bestowed upon him, and other restrictive measures designed to isolate him and limit his influence within Ukraine. The blocking of his YouTube channel represents the latest step in these ongoing efforts.

The decision to block Bardash’s YouTube presence underscores the Ukrainian government’s determination to counter pro-Russian disinformation campaigns, which have become a significant front in the ongoing conflict. Experts believe that Bardash’s public statements and online activities have the potential to sway public opinion within Ukraine and undermine national unity, making him a clear target for these counter-disinformation measures. The NSDC has explicitly stated that Bardash’s content aligns with Russian propaganda narratives, further justifying the decision to restrict his access to Ukrainian audiences.

This move reflects a broader trend of increasing scrutiny and regulation of online platforms in Ukraine during the wartime period. The government has prioritized countering disinformation and propaganda, recognizing the crucial role information warfare plays in shaping public perceptions and potentially influencing the course of the conflict. Blocking access to platforms and individuals spreading pro-Kremlin narratives is just one tactic employed in this wider strategy.

The case of Yuriy Bardash serves as a stark illustration of the divisions created by the war, highlighting the complexities of identity, allegiance, and freedom of expression in a time of conflict. While his transition from celebrated musician to vocal supporter of the invasion has shocked many, it also underscores the potent influence of propaganda and the challenges faced by governments seeking to maintain control over information flows in the digital age. The blocking of his YouTube channel symbolizes the ongoing battle between opposing narratives and the Ukrainian government’s resolve to protect its citizens from what it deems harmful disinformation.
