Ludhiana Police Crack Down on Fake News Propagators, Issue Stern Warning Against Misinformation

Ludhiana, Punjab – In a swift and decisive move against the spread of misinformation, the Ludhiana Commissionerate Police detained two individuals on Saturday for circulating fabricated videos on social media platforms. These videos, which quickly gained traction online, sparked unnecessary panic and alarm among the public, prompting immediate action from law enforcement authorities. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rupinder Singh addressed a press conference detailing the incident, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense and the police’s unwavering commitment to combating fake news.

The incident unfolded as misleading videos began circulating on various social media platforms, rapidly spreading through the online community and causing widespread anxiety. Concerned citizens promptly reported the videos to the Ludhiana Police, triggering an immediate investigation by the cyber cell. Through diligent digital forensics and online tracking, the cyber cell swiftly identified the two individuals responsible for disseminating the false information, leading to their subsequent detention.

DCP Singh revealed that a comprehensive analysis of the suspects’ social media profiles is currently underway. This investigation aims to uncover any potential connections to broader misinformation networks, identify any previous instances of similar activity, and determine the full extent of their involvement in spreading fake news. He underscored the importance of thoroughly examining the suspects’ online activities to understand the motivations behind their actions and prevent future occurrences.

DCP Singh issued a stern warning to the public, emphasizing the grave consequences of creating, sharing, or promoting fake videos and other forms of misleading content. “Spreading misinformation is a serious offense, and those found guilty will face strict legal action under our zero-tolerance policy,” he declared. The DCP stressed that such reckless behavior not only disrupts public order and creates unnecessary panic but also undermines the district administration’s efforts to maintain safety and security within the community.

The Ludhiana Police reiterated the importance of public vigilance and responsible online behavior. DCP Singh urged citizens to exercise caution and verify information from credible sources before sharing it on social media. He advised relying on official channels, such as government websites and verified social media accounts, to ensure the accuracy of information. "Your collective responsibility in maintaining peace and communal harmony is paramount," the DCP emphasized, calling upon residents to be active partners in the fight against misinformation.

District Public Relations Officer (DPRO) Ludhiana Puneet Pal Singh Gill echoed the DCP’s sentiments, urging the public to adhere strictly to the guidelines provided. He highlighted the official social media accounts of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ludhiana and the District Public Relations Office (DPRO) on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) as reliable sources for accurate and verified updates. Furthermore, Gill advised residents to cross-check information received through unofficial channels with these official sources before sharing it further. He also provided a list of contact numbers for various authorities, including the District Administration, Police Commissionerate, and emergency services, encouraging citizens to reach out directly for clarification and verification of information, especially concerning blackouts or other critical situations. This multi-pronged approach, combining proactive policing with public awareness and education, aims to create a more informed and responsible online environment, safeguarding the community from the detrimental effects of misinformation.
