Bharat Strikes Back: Operation Sindoor and the Ensuing Disinformation War

On April 22, 2025, a horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including a Nepali citizen. In response, Bharat launched Operation Sindoor, a series of precision air and land strikes targeting terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This decisive action, however, was met with a barrage of misinformation and propaganda, primarily orchestrated by Pakistan with the assistance of China. The digital battlefield became a key arena in this conflict, as fake news and manipulated narratives sought to undermine Bharat’s response and sway international opinion.

Pakistan, limited in its conventional response, resorted to a disinformation campaign exploiting social media and international news platforms. With Bharatiya authorities cracking down on Pakistan-origin social media accounts and trolls, Islamabad enlisted the help of its ally, China. The Chinese state-run media, including Global Times and Xinhua, quickly disseminated false reports claiming Pakistani air superiority and the downing of Indian fighter jets. This coordinated effort to manipulate the narrative highlighted the evolving nature of modern warfare, where information itself becomes a weapon.

The Bharatiya government and its diplomatic missions actively countered the misinformation campaign. The Indian Embassy in Beijing publicly challenged the Global Times reports, demanding fact-checking and source verification. PIBFactCheck, Bharat’s official fact-checking agency, worked tirelessly to debunk fake news circulating online, exposing manipulated videos, fabricated letters, and recycled footage misrepresented as current events. This proactive approach aimed to expose the falsehoods and maintain the integrity of information surrounding Operation Sindoor.

The disinformation campaign extended beyond military claims, targeting key Bharatiya assets like the BrahMos missile program. A forged letter, purportedly from a DRDO scientist, circulated online claiming flaws in the BrahMos system. PIBFactCheck promptly debunked this fabrication, highlighting the non-existence of the alleged scientist and reaffirming the missile’s successful recent tests. This incident underscored the malicious intent to undermine Bharat’s defense capabilities through fabricated information warfare.

Social media platforms also became battlegrounds in this information war. X (formerly Twitter) blocked over 8,000 accounts in Bharat following government orders citing national security concerns. This move, while aimed at curbing misinformation, sparked debate about censorship and the platform’s role in managing information flow. X defended its actions as necessary to maintain access in Bharat while also expressing concerns about the lack of transparency in the government’s directives. This highlighted the complex interplay between governments and social media platforms in navigating the challenges of online misinformation.

The international media landscape also presented challenges. Certain outlets, including The Irish Times, published editorials that failed to condemn the Pahalgam attack and instead criticized Bharat’s response. Bharatiya diplomats responded strongly, denouncing the biased coverage and defending the nation’s right to self-defense. Even the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) issued a statement perceived as favoring Pakistan’s narrative, further demonstrating the challenges faced by Bharat in shaping international perceptions amidst the propaganda onslaught. The incident involving Pakistan’s Defence Minister, who falsely claimed the capture of Indian POWs, only to retract his statement later, further exposed the deliberate spread of misinformation at high levels within the Pakistani government. While the disinformation campaign presented a significant challenge, the proactive efforts of the Bharatiya government, its diplomatic corps, and engaged citizens online played a crucial role in countering the false narratives and upholding the truth surrounding Operation Sindoor. The incident highlighted the increasing importance of media literacy and critical thinking in the age of information warfare.
