Thailand Condemns Cambodia’s Assassination Claims, Urges End to ‘Information Warfare’ Amidst Border Tension

BANGKOK – In a strongly worded rebuke, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa dismissed Cambodia’s accusations of an assassination plot against its leadership as “ugly” and “baseless,” characterizing them as part of a disinformation campaign aimed at escalating tensions. The accusations came amidst ongoing border disputes and heightened military activity between the two Southeast Asian nations. Addressing a press conference attended by representatives from 75 embassies and international organizations, Maris underscored Thailand’s commitment to international law and transparency, urging Cambodia to engage in sincere dialogue through established bilateral mechanisms. He categorically denied any Thai involvement in plots against Cambodian leaders, emphasizing the gravity of such allegations and their violation of international norms. The minister called for an immediate and comprehensive rebuttal of these claims on all diplomatic fronts, asserting the need to counter the spread of misinformation.

The border dispute, a long-standing issue rooted in historical territorial claims and nationalist sentiments, has recently escalated, leading to armed clashes and the capture of prisoners of war (POWs) by both sides. Maris clarified that Thailand’s actions along the border have been solely in response to perceived violations of its sovereignty and have been proportionate in nature. He rejected any suggestion of an invasion, emphasizing Thailand’s commitment to peaceful resolution through established channels like the General Border Committee (GBC). He further addressed the issue of Cambodian POWs currently held by Thailand, stating that they are being treated humanely and in accordance with the Geneva Conventions. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been granted access to verify the detainees’ conditions, underscoring Thailand’s commitment to transparency and adherence to international humanitarian law. Two POWs with health concerns have already been repatriated, demonstrating Thailand’s willingness to address humanitarian concerns.

The press conference served as a platform for Thailand to present its perspective on the escalating border situation to the international community, highlighting its commitment to peaceful resolution and adherence to international law. Maris reiterated Thailand’s willingness to engage in dialogue and de-escalate tensions, while simultaneously condemning what he termed “information warfare” tactics employed by Cambodia. He argued that such tactics distort reality and undermine the prospects for meaningful diplomatic progress. The minister urged Cambodia to cease these practices and called for support from Malaysia, which has offered to mediate in the dispute, to curb the spread of misinformation that could further inflame tensions.

The Thai government has also appealed to Cambodia to retrieve the bodies of its fallen soldiers near the conflict zone, emphasizing the humanitarian imperative of respecting the deceased and allowing for proper burial rites. This appeal reflects a desire to de-escalate tensions on a human level, demonstrating respect for life even amidst conflict. The minister also provided an update on the ongoing GBC talks, expressing hope for a permanent ceasefire and the establishment of reliable verification mechanisms to monitor the border situation. He welcomed Malaysia’s offer of mediation but stressed the importance of prioritizing the GBC framework as the primary platform for bilateral discussions and conflict resolution.

Beyond the immediate border crisis, Maris also addressed economic matters, highlighting a recent meeting with New Zealand’s trade minister. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral trade relationships and mitigating the impact of U.S. tariffs on global supply chains. This reflects Thailand’s broader foreign policy approach, which seeks to diversify economic partnerships and strengthen regional cooperation. The engagement with New Zealand underscores Thailand’s commitment to maintaining stable economic relations amidst global uncertainties and pursuing mutually beneficial trade agreements.

In concluding his address, Maris reaffirmed that any legal action against Cambodian leaders would be undertaken in accordance with Thai Cabinet directives and involve inter-agency coordination, ensuring compliance with international legal standards. This statement sought to pre-empt any speculation about potential unilateral actions and underscore Thailand’s commitment to due process. He emphasized that Thailand’s actions are guided by a commitment to international law and the pursuit of peaceful resolutions to disputes. The minister’s comprehensive address aimed to clarify Thailand’s position, counter misinformation, and reiterate the nation’s commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the ongoing border tensions with Cambodia. He expressed optimism about the potential for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and adherence to international norms.
