Syro-Malabar Church Condemns Janam TV’s “Malicious” Misrepresentation of Escaped Convict

The Syro-Malabar Church has issued a strong condemnation of Janam TV, a Malayalam television channel, for what it describes as a deliberate and malicious attempt to mislead the public regarding the identity of an escaped convict. Govindachamy, a convicted rapist and murderer, briefly escaped from Kannur Central Prison on Friday, July 25, 2025, before being apprehended hours later. The Church accuses Janam TV of intentionally referring to the convict as Charlie Thomas, a false name he once provided to authorities, despite official records and court documents consistently identifying him as Govindachamy. The Church alleges this misrepresentation is a calculated move to incite communal tensions and revive a baseless narrative surrounding religious conversion.

The Church’s Media Commission released a statement highlighting the convict’s history of providing multiple aliases to authorities, including names like Charlie, Krishnan, Raj, and Ramesh. The statement emphasizes that while initial police reports may have used the alias Charlie Thomas, subsequent investigations and all legal proceedings, including the Supreme Court’s final verdict, definitively established his true identity as Govindachamy or Govindaswamy. The Church criticizes Janam TV for disregarding this established fact and continuing to use the discredited alias, suggesting a deliberate intent to manipulate public perception and fuel religious animosity.

The Church’s statement expresses deep concern over the potential consequences of Janam TV’s actions, arguing that the channel’s insistence on using the false name is not driven by factual accuracy but by a desire to inflame communal sentiments. The Church contends that this deliberate misrepresentation is part of a broader attempt to sow discord and resurrect a false narrative about religious conversion, exploiting a sensitive issue to create division within society.

Fr. Tom Olikkarott, secretary and spokesperson for the Syro-Malabar Church’s Media Commission, reiterated the Supreme Court’s confirmation of the convict’s true identity as Govindachamy, questioning Janam TV’s motives. He pointedly noted that no other media outlet has perpetuated the use of the false name, raising suspicions about a malicious intent behind Janam TV’s repeated misrepresentation. Fr. Olikkarott stressed the Church’s intolerance for such false propaganda and called upon Janam TV to explain the circumstances surrounding their use of the incorrect name.

The Church’s condemnation highlights the potential for media outlets to manipulate information and exploit sensitive issues for their own agendas. The incident raises serious questions about journalistic ethics and the responsibility of media organizations to report accurately and avoid contributing to communal tensions. The Church’s call for an explanation from Janam TV underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in media practices.

The controversy surrounding the escaped convict’s identity underscores the delicate balance between freedom of the press and the responsibility to report truthfully and ethically. The Church’s accusations against Janam TV raise broader questions about the potential for media outlets to exploit sensitive issues and manipulate public perception for their own ends. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical role of accurate and responsible journalism in a society increasingly susceptible to misinformation and communal division. The Church’s call for accountability from Janam TV reinforces the importance of holding media organizations responsible for their reporting and ensuring that they prioritize truth and accuracy over sensationalism and the propagation of divisive narratives.
