Syrian Emergency Task Force Denounces Disinformation Campaign Amidst Coastal Violence

ISTANBUL – The Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF), a US-based organization, has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as a deliberate disinformation campaign aimed at escalating sectarian tensions in Syria. This campaign, according to the SETF, falsely accuses the Syrian government of systematically targeting religious minorities, including Alawites and Druze, in the country’s coastal regions.

The SETF vehemently denies these allegations, asserting that they lack any factual basis. They cite field sources and religious leaders from diverse Syrian communities who confirm the absence of any organized sectarian violence perpetrated by the government. Instead, the SETF points to undisciplined armed groups as the perpetrators of the violence, emphasizing the role of security forces in protecting civilians and restoring order amidst attempts by remnants of the Assad regime to instigate chaos and sectarian strife.

The disinformation campaign, the SETF claims, is being propagated by groups loyal to the ousted Bashar al-Assad regime and amplified by certain media outlets. The SETF warns that these distorted narratives not only misrepresent the reality on the ground but also actively impede efforts to restore security and stability in the country.

The SETF’s statement comes in the wake of a deadly attack on March 6th in the coastal town of Jableh, near Latakia, where at least 11 security officers were killed by elements associated with the ousted regime. This attack triggered a large-scale security operation, leading to violent clashes that claimed the lives of hundreds on both sides, including numerous civilians.

In response to the escalating violence, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa appealed for national unity and solidarity, while also urging security forces to prioritize the safety of civilians. The government has established an investigative committee to examine potential violations committed by security forces during the operation and to hold those responsible accountable. The security operations in the coastal region were officially declared concluded on March 10th.

The SETF appeals to all parties involved to exercise restraint and reject sectarian incitement. They further call upon media organizations and the international community to diligently verify information before disseminating it, in order to prevent the spread of misleading narratives that serve ulterior motives. The SETF reiterates its condemnation of all forms of violence and disinformation, expressing its support for initiatives aimed at achieving justice and security in Syria. They emphasize the critical need for accurate reporting and responsible information sharing to address the complex and volatile situation in the country, urging a focus on de-escalation and the protection of civilians. The organization stresses the importance of holding perpetrators of violence accountable, regardless of their affiliation, and calls for a concerted effort to counter misinformation and promote peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict.
