Starmer Condemns Musk and Populists for Spreading Misinformation on Grooming Gangs

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer launched a scathing attack on Elon Musk and right-wing figures, accusing them of propagating "lies and misinformation" regarding grooming gangs. This follows a series of inflammatory remarks made by the tech billionaire, who has doubled down on his accusations and voiced support for far-right individuals like Tommy Robinson. Starmer’s condemnation comes amidst a heated debate surrounding the government’s handling of the grooming gangs scandal and its refusal to initiate a second public inquiry.

Starmer, in a passionate speech addressing NHS reform, directly responded to the wave of criticism targeted at the government. He accused Musk and his supporters of exploiting the sensitive issue of grooming gangs for personal gain, stating, "Those who spread lies and misinformation are not interested in victims, they’re interested in themselves." He further criticized their association with Tommy Robinson, highlighting Robinson’s past conviction for attempting to obstruct a grooming gang case. Starmer condemned the attempt to derive "a vicarious thrill from street violence" promoted by figures like Robinson.

The Prime Minister also defended Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips against attacks from Musk and his followers. Musk had previously labeled Phillips a "witch" and accused her of supporting "genocidal rape abusers." Starmer vehemently refuted these claims, asserting that Phillips’s work to protect victims of sexual abuse far surpasses any efforts made by those criticizing her. He underscored the seriousness of far-right rhetoric and its potential to incite real-world threats.

Starmer also took aim at the Conservative Party for their silence on Musk’s inflammatory remarks, accusing them of complicity in the spread of misinformation. He emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting victims while condemning the use of lies and political opportunism in the debate surrounding grooming gangs. Starmer’s pronouncements reflect growing concerns about the increasing influence of far-right narratives in the political discourse.

Musk responded to Starmer’s criticism with further accusations, labeling the Prime Minister "utterly despicable" for his alleged role in the grooming gang crisis. On X (formerly Twitter), Musk reiterated his claim that Starmer had ignored the pleas of numerous victims to secure political support. He also escalated tensions by suggesting that "America should liberate the people of Britain from their tyrannical government," raising concerns about his growing influence in UK politics. Musk’s open support for controversial figures like Tommy Robinson, whom he described as a "political prisoner," has further amplified concerns about his role in fueling misinformation and racial division.

Starmer, who previously served as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), highlighted his extensive experience in prosecuting grooming gangs. He emphasized his commitment to tackling the issue head-on during his tenure as DPP, citing his efforts to reopen closed cases and bring forward significant prosecutions, including the first major case against an Asian grooming gang in Rochdale. He also noted his work to reform the prosecution approach to better support victims and challenge harmful stereotypes. Starmer expressed frustration with the ongoing attacks, emphasizing that his actions as DPP demonstrate his dedication to addressing the issue of grooming gangs effectively. He reiterated his focus on combating misinformation and ensuring that the debate remains grounded in facts and truth.
