Russian Propaganda Infiltrates Popular AI Chatbots, Spreading Disinformation to Unsuspecting Users
A new report from NewsGuard, an organization dedicated to tracking online disinformation, has revealed a concerning trend: popular artificial intelligence chatbots are being inundated with Russian propaganda, and this disinformation is frequently being relayed to unsuspecting users seeking information. The study, which audited ten leading generative AI tools from prominent tech companies like OpenAI, X (formerly Twitter), Microsoft, Google, and Meta, found that these chatbots repeated false Russian narratives approximately one-third of the time when prompted with leading questions related to Kremlin talking points. While the chatbots offered no response in about 18% of cases and successfully debunked the false narratives in 48% of instances, the fact that they propagated misinformation even a third of the time raises serious concerns about the vulnerability of these systems to manipulation and their potential to become unwitting conduits for propaganda.
