Nigeria Police Force Vows to Combat Misinformation and Disinformation

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced a renewed commitment to tackling the pervasive issue of misinformation and disinformation within the country. Recognizing the detrimental impact of false narratives on public trust and national security, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, emphasized the Force’s resolve to combat the spread of misleading content. This announcement comes amidst growing concerns over the proliferation of fake news and its potential to incite unrest and erode public confidence in security agencies. The IGP’s declaration underscores the NPF’s recognition of the urgent need to address this challenge proactively.

The IGP’s commitment was reiterated during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. Ndace commended Egbetokun’s proactive leadership and acknowledged the escalating threat of disinformation, highlighting its potential to undermine the credibility of the police and erode public trust in governance. VON pledged its support to collaborate with the NPF in countering the spread of false information and ensuring accurate information reaches the public. This partnership signifies a crucial step towards fostering a more informed and resilient society.

Egbetokun expressed gratitude for VON’s support, emphasizing the critical role of media organizations in combating disinformation. He stressed that misinformation often fuels public unrest and misrepresents the efforts of security agencies. He welcomed VON’s commitment to using its platform to counter fake news and pledged the Force’s full cooperation in disseminating accurate information to the public. The IGP also reaffirmed the NPF’s unwavering commitment to upholding press freedom, recognizing the media’s crucial role in factual and responsible reporting. He urged journalists and media organizations to prioritize fact-checking and verification before disseminating information to prevent the spread of falsehoods that could incite public disorder.

The NPF’s commitment to transparency and accountability is further demonstrated by its encouragement of open dialogue and constructive feedback from citizens and stakeholders. The IGP assured the public that the Force would continue to operate with professionalism, integrity, and respect for democratic values while taking decisive steps to tackle the menace of misinformation and disinformation. This commitment reflects the NPF’s dedication to fostering a strong relationship with the public built on trust and mutual respect.

The announcement of the NPF’s intensified efforts comes in the wake of numerous incidents of misinformation targeting the Force, particularly on social media. FactCheckHub, a prominent fact-checking organization, has debunked several false claims aimed at sowing mistrust against security agencies. One such claim falsely asserted that only police officers who have served as Commissioner of Police in Lagos State are eligible for appointment as IGP. FactCheckHub’s investigation revealed no such stipulation in the Police Act of 2020, highlighting the importance of verifying information before sharing it. Another debunked instance involved an old video circulated with a false claim that NPF officers had assaulted their female colleagues.

These incidents underscore the critical need for vigilance and fact-checking in the digital age. As misinformation continues to proliferate online, the NPF’s commitment to combating it and promoting accurate information is crucial for maintaining public trust, upholding national security, and fostering a more informed and responsible citizenry. The collaboration with media organizations like VON, combined with the efforts of fact-checking initiatives like FactCheckHub, represents a significant step towards achieving this vital objective. The NPF’s proactive approach to tackling misinformation and disinformation demonstrates its commitment to protecting the integrity of information and upholding its responsibility to serve the public good.
