East Haven Police Issue Warnings About Hoax Social Media Page Exploiting Community Compassion

EAST HAVEN, CT – The East Haven Police Department has issued multiple warnings to the community regarding a Facebook group page titled "East Haven Middle School" that has been disseminating a series of hoaxes designed to manipulate residents’ compassion and community pride. The page, which boasts over 700 members and continues to grow despite the warnings, has become a breeding ground for false missing person alerts, fabricated wanted individual posts, and bogus job listings. Police believe the scams originated recently, despite the page’s creation date of February 26, 2009, according to Facebook’s records.

The first cautionary notice from the police department was issued last Friday afternoon, alerting residents to the deceptive activities stemming from the "East Haven Middle School" page. The department reiterated its warning on Sunday, emphasizing the manipulative tactics employed by the perpetrators behind the hoaxes. "Scammers are exploiting your compassion and pride in our community to spread misinformation," the police stated. They urged residents to refrain from sharing or engaging with any content originating from the suspect page.

The police department underscored the importance of community vigilance in combating the spread of misinformation. They emphasized the detrimental impact of these hoaxes, not only in wasting valuable resources but also in eroding public trust and creating unnecessary anxiety. By sharing these fabricated posts, well-meaning community members inadvertently become unwitting accomplices in propagating false information, further amplifying the scammers’ reach and potentially hindering legitimate efforts to address actual community concerns.

Authorities are particularly concerned about the false missing persons reports, which can divert crucial resources from genuine cases and cause undue stress and panic among residents. The fabricated wanted individual posts pose a similar threat, potentially leading to misdirected public attention and jeopardizing the safety of individuals falsely accused. The bogus job listings, while less immediately alarming, can still lead to financial exploitation and disappointment for those seeking employment.

The East Haven Police Department is actively investigating the source of these hoaxes and working to identify the individuals responsible for creating and disseminating the false information. They are collaborating with Facebook to address the issue and potentially remove the offending page. In the meantime, they strongly encourage residents to rely on official channels for information, such as the East Haven Police Department’s website and social media pages, and reputable local news outlets.

Residents are urged to exercise critical thinking and skepticism when encountering information online, particularly on social media platforms. Verifying information from multiple trusted sources before sharing is crucial to preventing the spread of misinformation. The East Haven Police Department remains committed to protecting the community from online scams and other forms of exploitation, and they ask for the public’s continued cooperation in maintaining a safe and informed community environment. They reiterated their plea for residents to refrain from sharing any content from the "East Haven Middle School" Facebook group page and to report any suspicious online activity to the authorities. They emphasized that community vigilance and collaboration are essential to combating the spread of misinformation and protecting the integrity of the community’s online spaces.
