Bend Police Chief Addresses False Social Media Claims Linking Officers to Immigration Enforcement

Bend, Oregon – Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz moved swiftly to address public concerns on Monday, issuing a statement refuting false social media posts that erroneously linked Bend Police officers to immigration enforcement activities. The misleading posts, which circulated widely online, featured images of Bend Police detectives, falsely identifying them as agents of federal immigration enforcement agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Chief Krantz’s statement aimed to reassure the community that Bend Police officers are not involved in immigration enforcement, emphasizing the department’s commitment to upholding state law and building trust within the diverse Bend community.

The controversy arose from a photograph taken on Monday, depicting several Bend Police detectives walking along the Old Mill District trail as part of their Community Enhancement Program. The detectives were engaging in proactive, positive interactions with the public, fostering community relations and promoting a sense of safety. However, upon returning to their unmarked vehicles, they were misidentified as ICE agents in a social media post, sparking concern and confusion among residents. The incident highlighted the potential for misinformation to spread rapidly online and fuel anxieties, particularly surrounding sensitive issues like immigration enforcement.

Chief Krantz clarified that many Bend Police officers utilize unmarked vehicles for their investigative work, a practice essential for maintaining officer safety and effectively conducting criminal investigations. These unmarked vehicles allow officers to operate discreetly and gather information without compromising ongoing investigations. While officers in unmarked vehicles may not be in traditional uniform, they typically wear attire that clearly identifies them as members of the Bend Police Department, such as polo shirts with department insignia. The Chief stressed that the misinformation circulating on social media is not accurate and can contribute to undue fear and anxiety within the community.

Reiterating the department’s commitment to serving the community, Chief Krantz emphasized that the Bend Police Department’s primary role is to enforce state law, not federal immigration policies. Oregon law explicitly prohibits local law enforcement agencies from assisting federal authorities with immigration enforcement unless a judicial warrant is presented. This legal framework ensures that local police focus on maintaining public safety and upholding state laws, without becoming entangled in federal immigration matters. This clear delineation of responsibilities helps to maintain trust between the police department and the community, particularly among immigrant populations who may be wary of interactions with law enforcement.

“Unless a judge has signed a warrant telling our officers to do something like arrest a person, we don’t get involved in civil immigration enforcement activities or incidents,” Chief Krantz stated unequivocally. This statement reinforces the department’s adherence to legal boundaries and its commitment to serving all members of the community, regardless of immigration status. By clarifying its role and responsibilities, the Bend Police Department aims to alleviate anxieties and foster a sense of security among residents who might be concerned about immigration enforcement activities.

Chief Krantz urged the public to exercise caution and verify information encountered on social media before sharing it further. He stressed the importance of responsible social media engagement, emphasizing that spreading inaccurate information can exacerbate fears and anxieties related to immigration enforcement within the community. By promoting media literacy and encouraging critical thinking, Chief Krantz hopes to mitigate the spread of misinformation and maintain a climate of trust and transparency between the police department and the public. He encouraged residents to reach out to the Bend Police Department directly with any questions or concerns regarding immigration enforcement or any other law enforcement matters. This open communication policy aims to build stronger community relationships and address anxieties directly.
