Butuan City Hosts Forum to Combat Disinformation and Promote Information Literacy

BUTUAN CITY – The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Caraga recently spearheaded a critical initiative to combat the pervasive issue of disinformation, hosting “The War on Truth: Anti-Fake News Consultative Forum” in Butuan City. The forum, attended by nearly 130 participants, including government officials, law enforcement personnel, and media practitioners, aimed to equip attendees with the tools and knowledge to identify and counter the spread of false information. The campaign, dubbed “Maging Mapanuri” (Be Discerning), emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and information literacy in navigating the complex digital landscape.

PIA Regional Head Renelle L. Escuadro highlighted the urgency of addressing disinformation, emphasizing its potential to sow confusion and division among Filipinos. She stressed the need for collaborative efforts between government agencies and media partners to promote information literacy and foster a more informed and connected society. Escuadro underscored the role of media practitioners as crucial allies in reaching vulnerable communities and empowering citizens to discern truth from falsehood. This partnership between government agencies and media professionals is considered essential in effectively disseminating the campaign’s message to the grassroots level.

A key aspect of the forum focused on differentiating the various types of information pollution: misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information. Escuadro explained that misinformation is the unintentional spread of false information, often stemming from mistakes or misunderstandings. Disinformation, on the other hand, involves the deliberate dissemination of false narratives with the intent to deceive or manipulate. Mal-information, while based on factual information, is shared with malicious intent, potentially causing harm or violating privacy. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for effectively countering the spread of false information.

The forum provided practical guidance on verifying information before sharing it, including scrutinizing the source, purpose, ownership, and timing of the content. Participants were encouraged to utilize fact-checking resources and tools to validate information encountered online. Escuadro stressed the importance of vigilance and critical thinking in the face of the overwhelming amount of information circulating online, particularly on social media platforms, which are often breeding grounds for disinformation.

Participants engaged in a productive discussion on the current information ecosystem and the severity of information pollution in the region. They proposed proactive measures to mitigate the spread of disinformation, including the establishment of a task force for enhanced law enforcement and the empowerment of vloggers, social media influencers, and media partners as key allies in the fight against fake news. This collaborative approach aims to leverage the reach and influence of these individuals to effectively combat the spread of disinformation and promote media literacy among their followers.

PNP Deputy-Regional Director for Operations, PCol. Restituto P. Lacano Jr., emphasized the importance of the forum as a platform for learning, collaboration, and a renewed commitment to truth and ethical communication. He echoed the sentiment that combatting disinformation necessitates a whole-of-nation approach, underscoring the shared responsibility of government, media, and citizens in maintaining a healthy information environment. PIA Caraga reiterated its commitment to disseminating accurate and timely information and expanding the reach of the “Maging Mapanuri” campaign to ensure inclusivity and empower citizens with the tools to discern truth from falsehood in the increasingly complex digital landscape. The forum served as a crucial step towards building a more informed and resilient society, capable of resisting the harmful effects of disinformation. The collaborative efforts and proposed strategies highlighted the importance of public awareness, media literacy, and collective action in the ongoing fight against fake news.
