Pennsylvania Election Denier Appointed to Senior DHS Election Integrity Position

Heather Honey, Election Denier, Appointed to Key Homeland Security Position

Washington, D.C. – In a move that has sparked widespread concern among election experts and officials, Heather Honey, a prominent Pennsylvania election denier, has been appointed as the deputy assistant secretary for election integrity at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This appointment follows a pattern of the Trump administration elevating individuals who endorse his unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election. Honey’s history of spreading misinformation and challenging election results raises serious doubts about her suitability for a role crucial to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

Honey gained notoriety as the co-founder of PA Fair Elections, an organization that actively promoted false claims of voter fraud. She invested considerable resources in propagating these claims, some of which were echoed by former President Trump himself. Her background includes running several organizations, including Haystack LLC, Verity Vote, and the Elections Research Institute, where she describes herself as an “investigator.” The nature and extent of her investigatory work, as well as the potential conflict of interest arising from her continued involvement with these organizations while serving at DHS, remain unclear. Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmidt publicly criticized the appointment, highlighting ongoing litigation with Honey over her past legal challenges to Pennsylvania’s election laws.

Honey’s appointment to DHS comes amidst a backdrop of escalating concerns about election integrity and the potential for interference in future elections. Former President Trump’s continued insistence on the illegitimacy of the 2020 election, his vows to eliminate mail-in voting, and the Department of Justice’s recent demands for voter data from various states all contribute to a climate of distrust and suspicion. Critics argue that these actions, coupled with DHS’s recent cuts in funding to election security programs, create a fertile ground for undermining public confidence in the electoral process.

Experts warn that Honey’s appointment could further erode trust in DHS, particularly among state election officials. David Becker, founder of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, expressed concerns that DHS, under Honey’s influence, might amplify false claims about future elections rather than focusing on ensuring their security. This concern is fueled by Honey’s close ties to Cleta Mitchell, a prominent figure advocating for stricter voting policies purportedly aimed at preventing non-citizen voting – a phenomenon that is both rare and already illegal.

Honey’s track record in Pennsylvania raises further red flags. Her “research,” frequently cited by right-wing activists and even former President Trump, has been criticized for relying on incomplete data and presenting inaccurate conclusions. This flawed research has had significant repercussions, influencing some Republican secretaries of state to withdraw from the Election Registration Information Center, a crucial body responsible for maintaining accurate voter rolls.

As the 2024 election approaches, there are growing fears about Honey’s potential role in casting doubt on the election results should they not favor Trump. Her previous actions, including urging election officials to remove voters based on unreliable data and supporting unsuccessful challenges to mail-in ballots, suggest a willingness to undermine election processes. These actions paint a concerning picture of how Honey might leverage her position at DHS to influence election outcomes. Her appointment has drawn parallels to other Trump-era appointments criticized for prioritizing loyalty over qualifications and potentially jeopardizing democratic processes.

The appointment of Heather Honey to a crucial election security role within the Department of Homeland Security has understandably ignited a firestorm of controversy. Her history of promoting election misinformation, challenging legitimate election results, and associating with other prominent election deniers casts a long shadow over her fitness for this sensitive position. Experts warn that her influence within DHS could further erode public trust in elections, amplify false claims of fraud, and ultimately undermine the integrity of the democratic process. The coming months will reveal whether these concerns are justified, but the appointment itself represents a troubling development in the ongoing battle to safeguard American democracy. The potential consequences of this appointment extend beyond partisan politics, potentially influencing public trust in elections and the stability of democratic processes.
