Parliamentary Inquiry Launched to Combat Dangerous Anti-Sunscreen Movement on Social Media

LONDON – A parliamentary inquiry is set to investigate the alarming rise of anti-sunscreen sentiment on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The inquiry will focus on influencers who promote potentially harmful tanning products and spread misinformation about sun protection, often through paid partnerships with brands. MPs are particularly concerned about the proliferation of conspiracy theories claiming that sunscreen is akin to "rubbing cancer into your skin," as well as the promotion of "DIY sunscreen" recipes that lack scientific backing and may not offer adequate protection against the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays.

The inquiry aims to empower regulatory bodies, such as the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), to effectively tackle misleading health information disseminated by social media influencers. Current regulations are seen as inadequate in addressing the rapidly evolving landscape of online content, particularly the surge in influencer marketing. The committee will examine the scope of these harmful messages and propose measures to hold both influencers and the brands they partner with accountable for promoting unsafe practices. The increasing prevalence of these dangerous messages, often reaching impressionable younger audiences, necessitates a robust response to mitigate the potential public health consequences.

One of the inquiry’s key objectives is to raise public awareness about the dangers of excessive sun exposure and the importance of proper sun protection. This includes educating the public about the risks of UV radiation and debunking myths surrounding sunscreen use. The inquiry, chaired by Labour MP Carolyn Harris, who also heads the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Beauty and Wellbeing, will examine the impact of over-exposure to sunlight and develop strategies to prevent what some fear could become a public health crisis. Concerns are particularly high given the potential for long-term health consequences, including skin cancer, among those who adopt these unsafe sun exposure practices.

The British Beauty Council, a key supporter of the inquiry, will provide its recommendations to the government and the beauty industry next year. They highlight the pervasive nature of misinformation and disinformation across social media, emphasizing the lack of effective mechanisms to challenge or rectify these inaccuracies. The ease with which misleading information can spread online, coupled with the persuasive power of influencers, underscores the urgency of addressing this issue. The inquiry seeks to establish a framework for identifying and removing harmful content while also holding platforms accountable for allowing the spread of such misinformation on their sites.

The inquiry will also delve into the affordability of sunscreen products, advocating for their exemption from Value Added Tax (VAT) to ensure accessibility for all. This measure aims to remove financial barriers that might discourage individuals from using sunscreen, particularly those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. By making sunscreen more affordable, the inquiry hopes to encourage wider adoption of safe sun protection practices and reduce health disparities related to sun exposure. This affordability focus will be crucial in making sunscreen a readily available and essential part of everyone’s skincare routine.

The parliamentary inquiry marks a significant step towards addressing the dangerous trend of anti-sunscreen sentiment on social media. By investigating the influencers, brands, and platforms involved, the inquiry aims to protect the public from misleading health information and promote responsible sun protection practices. The ultimate goal is to curb the spread of harmful messages, educate the public on the dangers of UV radiation, and ultimately prevent a potential public health crisis stemming from unsafe sun exposure practices. The recommendations arising from this inquiry are eagerly anticipated by health professionals and regulatory bodies alike, and are poised to significantly impact the landscape of online health information.
