India Battles Disinformation Campaign Amidst Heightened Tensions
In the wake of India’s Operation Sindoor, a response to the Pahalgam attack, a surge of misinformation and fabricated claims has flooded the internet, propagated by international media outlets and Pakistan-backed organizations. This disinformation campaign aims to sow discord, incite panic, and undermine India’s image on the global stage. The Press Information Bureau (PIB), India’s nodal agency for disseminating government information, has been actively debunking these false narratives, urging the public to rely on official sources for accurate information.
One prominent instance of misinformation involved Al Jazeera, a Qatar-based news agency, which, citing Reuters, erroneously reported ten explosions near Srinagar airport in Jammu and Kashmir. The PIB swiftly refuted this claim, labeling it as fake and cautioning the public against falling prey to such misleading reports designed to create confusion and unrest. Adding to the deluge of false information, a recycled video depicting students from a private defence coaching institute celebrating their selection into the Indian Army was misrepresented as footage of Indian soldiers weeping and abandoning their posts.
