Pakistan’s Disinformation Campaign Persists: Manipulating Narratives Regarding Operation Sindoor.

Pakistan’s Disinformation Campaign Amidst Escalating Tensions with India

The recent surge in tensions between India and Pakistan has witnessed a parallel escalation in misinformation emanating from Pakistani media outlets and government-affiliated social media accounts. This orchestrated campaign seeks to distort facts, mislead audiences, and shield terrorist elements through a veil of patriotic propaganda. Numerous platforms have circulated unsubstantiated narratives, claiming retaliatory strikes by Pakistan within Indian territory and acting as uncritical mouthpieces for the state and military apparatus. This disinformation campaign serves to obfuscate the actual events and fuel further discord.

Fabricated Claims and Denial of Responsibility

Pakistani media channels have consistently propagated the unverified claim of the Pakistan Air Force shooting down numerous Indian drones. The figures range from 25 to 29 drones, with some outlets even specifying the use of Israeli-made Harop drones. However, these assertions lack any visual evidence or independent corroboration. In contrast, the Indian Army’s official statement and supporting military footage reveal that Pakistan initiated aggressive actions by launching drone and missile attacks following Operation Sindoor – a targeted military strike against terrorist launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. Despite the overwhelming evidence, Pakistani media continues to deny any wrongdoing and perpetuate the false narrative of their defensive actions.

Misrepresenting Civilian Casualties and Denying Cross-Border Terrorism

While Operation Sindoor specifically targeted terrorist bases, Pakistan’s retaliatory strikes along the Line of Control (LoC) resulted in civilian casualties in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani media channels have conveniently omitted the fact that India’s strikes were directed at terrorist facilities, including those belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba, and have failed to acknowledge the terrorists killed in the operation. Instead, they have emphasized civilian casualties without offering concrete details, effectively manipulating the narrative to portray Pakistan as the victim. Furthermore, they deny Pakistan’s involvement in cross-border terrorism and even dismiss reports of Pakistani activity in Jammu and Kashmir as "fake news."

Theatrics and False Narratives Regarding Karachi Port and Other Incidents

Pakistani media has also engaged in dramatic pronouncements, alleging Indian missile strikes on the Karachi Port and targeting of Pakistan Navy installations. These claims, like others, remain unsubstantiated by any verified information. The overall strategy seems to be to depict Pakistan as a victim of unwarranted aggression while simultaneously suppressing the legitimate military outcomes of Operation Sindoor and denying any connection to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.

Indian Government’s Fact-Checking Efforts to Counter Disinformation

The Indian government’s official fact-checking agency has actively debunked the misinformation disseminated by Pakistani media on social media platforms. For instance, a video falsely portraying a heavy MLRS barrage as a Pakistani attack on India was identified as originating from a video game. Similarly, old videos of wildfires were misrepresented as strikes on an Indian military base in Amritsar. The PIB Fact Check has consistently exposed such fabricated content and urged the public to rely on official sources for accurate information.

Continued Spread of Falsehoods by Pakistan-Affiliated Accounts

Despite debunking efforts, Pakistan-based social media accounts, including those affiliated with the military media wing and the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), continue to spread false narratives. Claims of Pakistan Air Force targeting the Srinagar Airbase and destroying an Indian Army Brigade Headquarters lack any credible evidence, visual proof, or satellite imagery. These relentless attempts to distort the reality of the situation highlight the ongoing disinformation campaign orchestrated by certain elements within Pakistan. The Indian government and its fact-checking agencies remain vigilant in exposing these falsehoods and providing accurate information to the public amidst this climate of manufactured narratives and escalating tensions.
